Bad News? Transmission Indicator Light is Yellow

I just took my wife's '07 X3 into the dealer it was originally bought from, so they could look it over and do an oil change.

They told me the inspection was about 8000 miles overdue, and an oil change was included in that, so they didn't do it.

They did look it over, however.

I got it back Thursday.

Today, on a short drive, a felt a shake and the dash indicator light for the transmission came on yellow. I turned around and headed straight home and during that drive it didn't seem to shift out of first gear.

Dealer shop isn't open until tomorrow.

Any idea what I'm looking at?
Is this a repair you would take anywhere else, or just to the dealer?
I'm expecting this to not be cheap, right?

She bought it less than two months ago.
Got the CarFax history and everything. This dealer is where it was originally bought and serviced. Any chance they could have messed something up when they were looking it over? I mean, they gave it a clean bill of health and just said to get the routine check-up done (quoted about $600, IIRC). UGH.

Found the inspection report from last week.
Just to share, I took out and looked over the report from last week's visit.
Here's what they found during their inspection-

I took it in to have them check it out for riding rough and for an oil change. They checked out a bunch of stuff. Said it looked great. Work order lists the recommended action as MAINTENANCE 2. They tested the battery, it was fine.

Verbatim from the report-
WHILE TEST DRIVING FOR LINE 7 COULD NOT DUPLICATE ANY SHIFTING ISSUES. COULD NOT DUPLICATE HESITATION.
RIDES NORMAL. STIFF FEEL WHILE DRIVING IS NORMAL. COMPARED TO LIKE VEHICLE.
Later on they say-
NO ABNORMAL NOISES AT THIS TIME. POSSIBLE LIFTER NOISE BEING HEARD. MAY NEED UPDATED LIFTERS AND ROCKER ARMS.

Then they say THRUST ROD BUSHINGS WORN. REC REPLACEMENT & ALIGNMENT.

I can't verify all this stuff, because these cars are just too complicated. Maybe it will shed some light though.
