3.0d fuel economy??

Just wondering if there are any updates on the mpg figures for those lucky few who have 3.0d's?

Due to mess up of spec I am looking to reorder and considering the 3.0d, despite being very pleased with the 2.0d

Now at 1,500 miles
Overall average is 35mpg but nearly all my driving is on narrow rural roads - some single track and some unmade.
Only done one run on major roads - that was nearer 40mpg.

What I have noticed is a recent, and fairly sudden, increase in mpg - same route has gone from 33 up to 39 mpg.

Does the engine/transmission mapping change after a certain mileage?

That's interesting, not that much lower than the 2.0d, I'm currently at 37.5 with my 2.0d

2.0 vs 3.0 mpg will depend on how much of the performance you use. With the 2.0D you're likely to be working the engine harder than a 3.0D driver will, unless the 3.0D driver is very racy. The official consumption figures between the engines aren't hugely different either.

I'm hoping the 3.0D does lot better than my current car....19 to 22 mpg around town, 30 to 33 mpg on long runs over A roads and motorways.

It's not what you drive - it's how you drive it!
After a few thousand miles when the engine is run in, economy will improve.
Our 330d Averages 45MPG easy.

I've only done about 1,000km from new in my 30d, with a mix of suburban and freeway driving. Still smile every time I drive it.

Average consumption so far is 10.2L/100km - not sure how that coverts to mpg.

I'm very impressed with this, as my previous car, Audi A4 1.8T w CVT averaged about 8.9 Before that a LexusRX350 (mobile sofa) was about 15.....

Promising news if the 3 is so close to the 2 in terms of mpg. Someb of the 2 mpg reports looked a bit alarming but as above, depends on how heavy your foot is. Can't wait for my 3.0d!

All depends on how you drive it boys (and girls). I would be under 30mpg average in a 30d for sure, otherwise, what's the point in that extra power?!

Although the proud owner of an xDrive20d, I am secretly quite jealous of the 30d brigade and if ordering now would probably have opted for the 30d, or even waited for the 3.5d - you will pay more tax and more insurance though! £125/year for the xDrive20d. All over that!

If you use the power all the time you'll have great mpg as you'll have no license! It's a balance of using it at the right time and not being a boy racer....but this depends on your point of view.

The 3.5D will be even quicker than the 3.0D but I wonder if the difference will be that big, maybe the main point it that it will feel more effortless. I know with the older 335D engine the economy suffered, could be the newer engine is better.

Hey now, I'm getting 11.4 mpg in my 35i. Your 19 mpg is but a dream to me.

In US MPG my 19mpg (imperial) is 15.8 so you are pushing it! The X3 will be less fuel efficient due to 4 wheel drive, though the 60kgs extra over my vert won't make a lot of difference. With what we pay for gas many of us have to be more restrained!

You might reevaluate when you realise just how slow you have to drive it to average above 40...

Not boy racer, just not trying to keep mpg down all of the time. If I drove it like a boy racer I'd be 20-25mpg

I don't expect 40 mpg, 30 to 38 would be good, depending on roads and mood. I don't know if that's a reasonable hope.

Hopefully I will take delivery of my 3.0d m sport next weekend and will probably never be out of it for the first few weeks at least, so will be interesting to see what mpg is.

At the moment I run a 3 series 330d and get between 35-45 mpg totally depending on how I drive it, and agree with sfax what is the point in having all that torque and not enjoying it. The power is incredible, and I hope the x3 will offer the same thrill when you accelerate. Cant wait!!!

Coming from a 335i vert all I can say is that the performance when pushed is like a video game, it's so frigging fast. The 3.0D won't be much slower. You simply can't drive it hard all the time, you will be dead or lose your licence, UK roads are just too busy. In fact with typical UK roads I have to rein back the power as especially with RFTs the car is getting thrown all over the road even with relatively gentle undulations. Yes you use the performance but not all the time. If you look at genuinely fast cars, mostly they are being driven around at sane speeds with just occasional "fun blasts", this is often how it is once you get over the initial thrills.
