2011 or wait for 2012?
Dealer has told me I can have a 2011 car to my spec in about 4 weeks - to be confirmed - or do I wait for a 2012 with delivery mid/end October?

I've been wondering the same thing. I have an X3 on order since July 7th...no production status yet. Seems like rumors are Sept. for 2012 models. I called my CA and she said only change is the 28i is going to the reported 4 cylinder turbo. She didn't sound like she was certain though...My guess is the only difference might be the RTTI for the NAV. Maybe it's something that can be retrofitted?

Le Chef..we do? We have the NAV that gets info from like the traffic station or something, but it's less accurate than RTTI which uses actual cell phone like transmitters in each vehicle to gather data on traffic in real time every 3 minutes as far as I know.

I test drove an X3 and a 535i recently and they both showed live traffic data on screen. In this case traffic light failure and traffic backup. That I presumed was RTTI.

From www.bmwusa.com
"Why is RTTI not available for the X3? This vehicle’s BMW Navigation systems are based on hardware and software that doesn’t support RTTI. Retrofitting RTTI is not possible. When this model is replaced with a new design, RTTI may be made available. "

Odd...I'm looking at bmwusa.com under the features of the x3 and it does say there in NAV about the RTTI. In a previous post someone had mentioned that RTTI might be a new change for 2012 though.. Can anyone confirm?

The current US RTTI is different to the new MY12 German RTTI. Basically, the US RTTI gathers traffic info from FM radio stations that broadcast traffic data continuously. This data is received & decoded by a dedicated radio tuner in the nav unit. BMWUSA website didn't give the technicals behind this, but I suspect it's just plain & simple RDS-TMC, which is wht pre-MY12 EU-spec nav is using (i.e. US & EU use the same system). Any nav unit, be it portable or built-in, can offer this type of service as long as it has a RDS-TMC receiver. RDS-TMC can be considered as a simplex system as data is only transmitted one-way from the radio stations.
MY12 German RTTI uses RDS-TMC in combination with a built-in cell phone transmitter with it's own simcard. It's a much more complex system than plain RDS-TMC. Autoevolution have an article abt this system. Currently, only Germany, UK, France & Italy have this service. |
