Number of buttons on the key. On what it depends?

Some have 4 buttons on their keys, some only 3... On what it depends?

All Fxx keys have 4 buttons standard: unlock button, lock button, trunk button and finally the spotlight button. The Exx have 3.

I have a X3 F25 but it only has 3 buttons- unlock, lock & trunk. What's the spotlight button?

One press activates the headlamp courtesy delay or pathway feature. A long press (3 seconds) activates the panic mode of the alarm system.

Do you not have a diamond button under the boot open button? Works as per Nahoa's description

My key has 4 buttons. However, there is no "diamond" on the 4th button, but rather a red panic horn. As far as I know, they have the same functions - click for courtesy lights, and hold for panic alarm.

Theft alarm
Fog lights
PDC
Light package (interior and in doorhandles)
Auto dim mirrors
Back cam with top view
Panorama sunroof
Auto start/stop

Well, I'm stumped. Part of folding and auto-dimming mirrors? Lotus would know....

Interesting, my X3 has all options mentioned by Richard, plus one or two others, no keyless entry though, but I also don't have the fourth button

I think it's a recent USA/elsewhere thing, in that cars destined for the USA still have the forth button, but the rest of the world just has the lock, unlock and boot buttons. With sfax having a relatively early build, this expalins why he has the diamond button.

On my car, which is an August 2012 build, I have comfort access, powered bootlid, folding mirrors and xenons, and I have the 3 buttons mentioned above.

Why remove this feature for non USA bound cars? Saves a per pence/cents on the car costs? I presume all the electrics are still in the car to support the 4th button. I wonder if the electrics are still in the fob (just the button removed?). I can get the back off my key, but don't want to break it in two to see the PCB.

Maybe BMW think you should be using your phone app to flash the lights, unless you've got the Android version which is

Using the remote app would be a poor substitute in any case as it takes over a minute to respond and it flashes 3 times rather than just keeps them on for a short time

A better substitute is to unlock your car but that has some disadvantages like unnecessarily moving seats and mirrors and switching on internal lights. Car will lock again automatically if you have that set up and forget to lock.

Perhaps a knowledgeable dealer would know the answer as to why they took it away
