Most reports I've seen have been '13-'15 production years...
Maybe a '16 here or there if it was made with suspect parts from the 13/15 saga.

'17s seem to be pretty good - so far...

No report of a '17 from the time chain issue. Or any other issue I can recall. And most reports are not '13-'15. Virtually all, if not all, are 2013.

The original warranty of my 2017 X3 xDrive28i expired in July. I am in two minds about extending the warranty or self insured. I figure the money saved will not be enough for the worst case scenario: engine replacement.

Before my 2015 expired I checked with the dealership and they quoted $5900 to take my car to 7 year/100K miles. The shorter term options weren't long enough for my piece of mind.

Since then, I've had a $1600 instrument cluster repair. Some recall work. New battery. And just recently some sensor issues that turned out to be covered by a special warranty by BMW (10 year/120K miles). So so far I've come out ahead in self insuring, as long as I get through the next 2 months

Well, for under $25k you could be in a low miles 2017 X3 28i and not have to worry if anything went wrong when they replaced the engine.

Extended warranties are like going to the Casino, most people loose in the end, but a few people get luck and win
Are you feeling lucky or just want to gamble so you don't worry yourself to death about a major failure

I think cost of warranty matters too. Just before my factory warranty expired I got a quote of $5900. I would have spent $2500 or so. But nearly $6000 was too much to me.

The car has 34,000 km (22,700 miles). The extended warranty that covers to July 2024 or 100,000 km (66,700 miles) costs CAN $4,330. My gut feeling is I don't need the extended warranty, since the major repairs may happen 5 years later, not during extended warranty coverage. However, I noticed the posting on engine failure on 2015 and 2016 recently. That prompted me to ask any engine failure on 2017.
