reverse vs. park
How long will it take me to remember that park is press the button instead of putting the car in reverse. Picked up my X3 yesterday and took my wife shopping. when i pulled into the parking space and put the car in park by pushing the stick forward of course i was in reverse as she tried to get out of the car "dummie"
i can't be the only one huh? |

I haven't had a problem remembering the park button, but i do confuse drive and reverse. I often push the selector forward for drive. Only to find the car starting to move back! Seems backwards to me. I drove a manual before this btw.

We pick up our X3 today and have been wondering how easy it will be to adapt to pushing buttons in lieu of shifting a lever. Seems like Reverse wouldn't be a problem since you pull back the lever on floor shift automatics already to get to reverse, but drive is also a pull back from park on floor shift autos so that's what I think will be hard to get used to.I'll find out in 6 hours!

Takes a week or so to get used to it. Fine now.

it's confusing at first but as others have said you get used to it very quickly. The "helpful" warning that stays on the iDrive screen for an eternity if you try to put the car in reverse and don't press the button first used to be really annoying - you learn the hard way!

You get used to the control stick very quickly. I much prefer it over a larger traditional gear selector because it is so much more compact and classy looking. Probably was my number 1 turn off on the Q5 (decided to not even drive it) was how large the shifter was compared to the X3 and how it blocked half the console. |

[QUOTE=paul386;10954506]Not on small propeller driven aircraft.
Sorry, but on the small prop planes I've flown(Grumman and Piper) the throttle is pushed forward for power. Not important. Agree on the gear selector. I find it unique and very stylish. |

I've had a similar gear selector system in my Z4 for 18 months now, and I still flick it up into reverse on occassion - usually when I am in a hurry.
In both the Z and the X3. Its hard to break with 20 years of thinking on how an automatic gearbox is configured. The good news is it automatically puts it in park if you turn off the engine with the selector in R or D.

I remember I was nervous backing out of the garage when I first got my X3. Thinking that if I didn't pay enough attention, I would go forward instead of backing out. But give it a few days, and you will get used to it in no time.

I did both
I threw the car in reverse instead of Park many times initially, I also put the car in Drive when I was really thinking Reverse. I've had the car for almost 2 months and don't make those mistakes much any longer. Dropped off after about the first 3 weeks or so.
Now when I drive my Durango or my wife's car I'm looking at the dash expecting to see the back-up camera!

Have any of you been worried or have had bad experiences with valet parking where they didn't know how to put it in Park? I'm wondering if this will be an issue when I get my new X3. My current X3 (2009) obviously has the older controls.

Since all my other rides are manual transmissions (this is only the second automatic transmission vehicle I've ever owned), pushing the shift lever forward for reverse seems perfectly normal. However I always feel it should also be moving to the side of being pushed down.

When I am in a hurry, and not really thinking, I may still instinctively
push the lever forward to park. I was concerned about the shifter before I got the car, but am doing much better with it than I thought. That said, I wouldnt mind a good old fashoned P-R-N-D-L, like nearly every other car on the road. (I hate those gated shifters, though. Mercedes and Chrysler use them...) |
