2012 X3 28i forgets all Bluetooth phones each start

I've been using Bluetooth with a variety of phones in my X3 and it was always working well until about a month ago when all of the associated phones were cleared from the Bluetooth menu. (you can only enter 4, which is too few in my case, but thats another gripe).

So I entered my phone again by associating it with a passkey and then placed a call fine. However, the next time I got in the car the bluetooth phones list was again empty. It no longer remembers the phones that have been associated with it so I have to reconnect and enter a matching passcode on the phone and in the car every time I want to place a call.

Has anyone else seen this? What can I do to make the car remember my Bluetooth devices again like it did during my first year of ownership?
