bmw oil level sensor fault

Looking for some help , I have a oil level inactive message on my idrive screen coupled with low oil temp after driving for quite some time . The oil temp gauge barely moves from a 1/4 and oil level is unavailable . We slaved a new one in but just plugged it in did not remove old one from oil tank and we still had the same fault . We plugged the old one back in and reset everything and it seemed to work , however same symptoms have occurred . ISTA say oil conditioning sensor / waterpump/ alternator if I remember correctly . Cannot reset oil service neither . Car runs fine otherwise . Suspect the oil level sensor is at fault ? Any thoughts ? Will probably change the sensor tomorrow , just wondering if anyone has had the same issue. Sorry if I’m not too clear .
