Minimum Service Intervals?

We have a 2012 X3 28i, that was first put into service in October of 2011. It now has less than 4K miles on it. When I use the iDrive menus to check "Vehicle Status / Service Required", it shows: "09/2013" and "Service due in 16,000 miles".

From here on out, this car will be mostly driven by wife who will not drive it anywhere close to 16K miles before September of 2013. So that means BMW is recommending going two years before the first oil change. The owners' manuals for all of our previous BMWs said you shouldn't go more than one year without a service. I wonder if the displayed next service information of "09/2013 or 16,000 miles" is actually BMW's minimum requirement in order to keep the warranty in force?
