USB Drive / Hard Drive
I seem to be reading conflicting information about these two items
I want to use a USB Flash drive to play music from the USB port in the armrest (actually using a 32gb SD card in a USB card reader) I also have a 1 tb portable drive with a back up of all my music which I would like to use if possible with a Y cable providing power and data to / from the drive. What format should the drives be NTSF or FAT32? Will the BMW support file hierarchy for example letter/artist/album (for example A\Abba\Abba's Greatest Hits) or do all folders have to be on the root? - Just to clear up I don't have any Abba on my Drive! Is it also the case that the 12v power socket shuts down 15 minutes or so after the engine turns off? Any help appreciated Last edited by Happy jack; 03-14-2014 at 04:07 PM.. |

I'm using a Seagate GoFlex 500GB formatted NTFS; but FAT32 will also work. All music is in ..\Music. I don't know how the iDrive would index your proposed hierarchy. Easy enough to try on thumb drive with small sample. Yes, the socket powers down. BTW, I'm using only single usb cable with no power problems.
Edit: You could use your hierarchy if you use "Browse Directory". Last edited by Radioactive; 03-14-2014 at 05:27 PM.. |

Thanks for that - what I don't want to do is have to reformat or change the file hierarchy in my portable drive because it won't work on my tablet or music system in my caravan. Don't even ask about about portable drives and tablets!
Browse directory sounds good - I am thinking of a Y cable because the X3 I tried didn't seem to have enough power to spin the drive but I didn't have much time to play Last edited by Happy jack; 03-14-2014 at 05:47 PM.. |

Does anyone know if the USB connector in the passenger glove box can also be used to play music through the sound system? |
