Question Small paint scratch

All,

I was installing my new lisc plate and accidentally dropped the screw driver, face down and now there's a small paint scratch, where I can see a little grey.

Any suggestions on what to do/get to make sure it doesn't spread over time?

I've had good luck with Dr. Colorchip.
http://www.drcolorchip.com/

It's great for little rock chips you get on the front, and does well with minor scratches. Easy to use too.

Thanks for that link. Will the dealer be able to fix this and if so, approximate cost would be somewhere in the park of?

On 2nd thought, I may just order this and do it myself. Will it hurt the paint over time? Has anyone ever used this? Comments?

I used this on my last X3.

It’s not perfect, but the paint matches very well, and unless you really look for the scratch or chip it is not very noticeable. Of course I know it’s there, but to people looking at your car they most likely won’t know there was a scratch there. For me it worked much better than regular touchup paint because you get it even with the sourrounding paint without any sanding.

It’s certainly worth a try, if you don’t like the results an expensive body shop repair is still available.

I feel better now knowing someone has used it. I may end up ordering it and then applying it and see what happens.

Is it really as easy as the guy in the video above says it is?

It’s not quite as easy as the video, but if you goof it up the blending solution takes it right off so unlike with regular touchup paint that will smear, it won’t look like a botched job.

The trick is not to remove the paint in the scratch with the blending solution and keep it even with the surface (rub very lightly). The first time it took me a couple of tries. Some scratches will need two coats. These can be applied after a short 10 minute waiting period. The paint will look a bit dull for 24-48 hours and as it cures it will develop a shine.

It’s really made for rock chips. The rule of thumb on scratches is if you can’t feel the scratch with your finger nail, it’s not deep enough to use this. The wider the scratch the harder it is to fill properly. Make sure you clean the area first so the paint can stick.

I’ve only used it on Jet Black cars. They say that it works better as far as being noticeable on darker colors.

If the scratch is not deep into the lacquer you could polish it out or if deep into the lacquer, just apply some lacquer using a fine tipped lacquer pen. Then allow to harden and polish flat. If it's through into the actual paint, you'll need paint and lacquer.

It's not a difficult job just time consuming.

The F-25 is probably too new for Dr. Colorchip’s selector.
I would go to their selector and choose another model car, but choose the same color.
I think they are the same..ie. Jet Black 3-series is the same paint as a Jet-Black F25.
