I thought the X3's sounded louder on the outside than most other cars.
The 35i was louder on idle than the 28i, but quieter under heavy throttle.

The X3(F25) comes with (3) distinctly different exhaust systems.
The "throaty", louder system is delivered on 35i models only. It uses a "Dual-Path" muffler that uses a quieter path through the muffler for light load cruising and a direct "straight-through" path during start up, at large throttle openings, and during turbo boosted operation. A electronically controlled vacuum actuator switches the muffler path. The 35i can get away with an almost direct exhaust because of the inherent noise reduction of the turbocharger's turbine housing. The 28i, 30d and 35d models use a dual pipe, single path (always muffled) system. The 20i and 20d models use a single pipe, single path (always muffled) system. |

Electronically controlled, "dual-path" exhaust systems like the X3 35i uses are found on some other BMW's as well as several Ferrari models and the Chevy Corvette.
