Got into an accident in trade-in car
Hi guys,
I have scheduled to pick-up my new X3 tomorrow, but I got into an accident (rear_ended) today on my trade-in car, the car runs fine but needs minor work paid by the other driver's insurance. My current options: 1. go to the dealer tomorrow, let him know about the accident and pick-up new car 2. postpone new car pick-up, fix the trade-in car and not mention about the a accident 3. postpone new car pick-up, fix the trade-in car and mention about the a accident What do you guys think should be the next best course of action? Will the dealer reduce the price of the trade-in? will I have legal issues if I don't mention about the accident? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks. |

Deal with them the way you want them to deal with you. Would you be okay if someone hit your new X3 before delivery, they repaired it, and gave it to you without saying anything?
If doing the right thing isn't enough for you, check anything you signed when completing the order and leaving your deposit. You may have committed to telling them of any such event.

I'm with Nahoa on this - treat them the way that you want them to treat you. There's another choice.
4. Call the dealer, tell them what happened, and ask what your options are. |

You need to be honest with them all they have to do is run a carfax and they will know. This is the perfect time to let your dealer know and what ever amount they take off for the accident - the other insurance should have to come up with the difference…and they will take off for an accident…that has been my experience anyway.

I have to agree with the honesty option. I would want them to be honest with me when purchasing a used vehicle. I also agree with calling or stopping by before you do any repairs and asking them what your options are. Since you have signed an agreement they may be able to assist you with the body work or have an alternative that you have not considered. I am sure you are not the first person this has happened to. Good luck, sorry to hear of your misfortune.

This will not be their first rodeo. You might be lucky and they will take on the car as is and deal with the insurer for you.

I'd do option 1. they want to sell a car. I'd suspect they'd want you to take delivery of your new car and they will work something out on the fix.
let us know what happens, as a lot of us are driving our trade-in cars and, at least me, are curious what would happen if this were to occur. |

I'd bet that since it's the other driver's fault, they'd want to take your car now. They'd probably deal with the other guy's insurance, then fix the car themselves, and make even more money on your trade!!! Go to the dealer and be straight. if they try to screw you, tell them my idea in this post. you'll need to work with the sales manager or GM of the dealer....
good luck! |

As far as not telling them, I wouldn't even consider that personally. I would wager that all of the folks who advise such would be the first to go ballistic if they discovered they bought a vehicle with damage that was not divulged. Such is our society....

Agree with all the "be honest" posters. No other way.

Take it by the dealer and let them see the damage. That way they know exactly what the damage was and should deal with it fairly. Having it fixed and then trading would leave doubt.
Always treat them as you would want to be treated.
