Wheels....

Hi all,

I am in the process of changing my tyres from Run Flats to Non run flats and thought it may be a good idea to look into some bigger wheels

I currently have the standard MSport 18 inch wheels with run flat tyres

I am confused as to whether to change them to 19's or 20's with Non Run Flat tyres

What are peoples thoughts? Would I be ok with budget tyres?

Do I stay silver or move to Gloss Black?

I went from 18s to 20s and back down to 19s. Perfect right now.

Any chance of seeing some pictures as I would be interested in how the 19's look

I would personally never buy budget tires if by budget you mean some off brand nobody ever heard of. There are a number of well-known brands that are somewhat less expensive than premium brands like Continental or Michelin. I have used some of those in the past.
As for wheel color, that is totally personal preference as illustrated by the fact that I would not take the best set of black wheels on earth even if they were free. I think the black look is way overdone and dulls the overall appearance of a car. But that's just me.

I added winter tires this past month and put them on my OEM rims. I am thinking of adding new rims to the Perrili RFT come spring. Debating on going to black myself given the color of our X3 and its black trim, or just sticking with some version of OEM silver rims. Decisions, decisions.

If you're moving from run flat tires to non run flats, why not enjoy the ride offered by the latter? Moving to bigger wheels with thinner sidewalls, no matter how nice they might look, will detract from your X3's great suspension which heretofore was hidden by those awful OE run flat tires.

Go to Tire Rack!

Shop wheels at Tire Rack. When you enter car type it will show you a X3 side view. You will have over 20 wheels to look at and select. As you do the wheels will change on the X3. Great way to see how they look!

Thanks TEF - trust me I have thought and still considering this as I am aware of much of a significant difference it makes. I just don't want to be BUYING 18's

In my opinion, the OEM wheels I have in the picture above are disgusting hence the temptation of new wheels OR I just keep what I've got with premium non run flats.

Thanks BMW JA

I have tried this before and it doesn't seem to like my postcode. Not sure whether it's because it's a UK postcode

20's would look the best but would be a hard ride. 19's are a good balance between looks and ride quality.

I personally wouldn't buy budget tyres. The tyres are the only thing connecting your car to the road.

Wheel colour is a personal preference. I personally hate black wheels. Have you looked at shadow chrome? That's a nice colour.

Agree - I don't think I will putting on any budgets.

I'd rather keep my crappy 18's with premium tyres! The whole point I bought my X3 was for the comfort and room after becoming a father for the 1st time. I would hate to mess up my ride.

I just thought as I am changing from run flats I would be able to go up in size without much difference to the ride quality. I guess I was wrong 😑

The wheels on the UK version of your F25 are quite attractive. Here in the US, the most commonly seen wheels on an F25 are BMW wheel style 307, so yours would seem almost unique. Funny how the grass is always greener...

A couple of days late to this thread I know, but OP, if it helps, here is a before and after pic of an F25 with your wheels on that I bought recently.

It had been badly chavved up with wrap on the roof, mirrors and front bumper and the wheels painted black. Personally I hate black wheels, they lose all definition and just end up lost in the arches.

I do agree that they’re not the most attractive wheel ever, but they look way better in the OE colour. I fitted them a couple of days ago after having them refurbed and I’ve spent some time removing the wrap and dodgy tints. For me, the car is transformed.

Hope that helps with your decision making. Oh, and the car is on 18” non-RFT’s and even with the M-Sport suspension the ride is really good 👍🏻

Cheers
Tom

I actually like the gloss black wheels on the car above. I have a white with msport and have gotten the gloss black front grills and will eventually do gloss black Oem wheels (maybe). I do have runflats from previous owner and will end up changing those out when the time is right

You beat me to it....I totally agree. I actually genuinely love the grey X3. Not sure about the roof but the black wheels go really well with the grill. (Maybe 19s but deffo black on grey)

dont forget to calculate the rotations per the new wheels and tire sizes. rotations need to match as close as possible or a few thousand miles down the line you'll be needing a new transmission.. thanks to the super sophisticated awd system

Not a great picture but absolutely loving the drive on Non run flats...

x4 Michelin Primacy 3's (245/45/19s square set up)
Tyre Ratings
B = Fuel
A = Wet Grip
69db = Noise level

Super dirty car - can't wait to spend hours cleaning her....

nice job!

if you can, apply a ceramic coating on the wheels before they get ingrained with brake residue.
