Performance wise our top competitors are?

I believe the Q5 do not match the X3's power at least until the new ones come out. The MB is relatively weak. What SUV's should we be aware of that is similar in performance? Not that I race often. My gas mileage the last two tanks have been around 25-26 mpg with a mix of HW and City driving. The Lincoln MKZ is at 305 hp/ 280 tq. I assume the Edge is slightly under. The SRT8 would be way beyond as well as our big brother M's.

Maybe a Subaru forester STI, though not in the same premium catergory but it flies as hell!

The Lincoln MKZ has similar HP numbers at the X3 35i but it isn't even close to the X3 in performance. The closest I have seen would be the Porsche Cayenne S. The Porsche has about the same 0-60 numbers and handling but it is larger and a lot more expensive.

I think the cayenne/toureg hybrids would also be close...

Volvo XC60 R-Design is the closest, at least until (R)SQ5 arrives to compete with the X3M.

The Infinti EX35 is fast and handles well - its just small. not sure it could quite keep up w/ a 35i, however i'm sure it could beat a 28i and either engine Q5.

I test drove the Q5 2.0t and Volvo xc60 R-design. The Q5 wasn't even close (and the 6cyl version has horrible mpg compared).

The Volvo was very very close power, handling but it just wasn't a BMW. Interior trim overdone.

4k miles on my Msport CB X3 35i and haven't regretted 1 second. What an amazing piece of machinery. If only the 35d was available in the US it would be the penultimate.

Not much until the Cajun arrives. "350" is the magic number apparently. 0 - 100km/h in 5.1. 0 - 200 km/h 16.5 are the target outputs. Tasty!

Car&Driver posted this week a confirmation the Cajun is coming to the US in 2013 - Some stiff competition on the way. apparently a Cayenne Diesel coming to the US as well. now that's something to drool over, although not actually afford.

someone in my family has a Cayenne Turbo its amazing, but it also cost almost 3 loaded X3 35i's....

any ideas on MSRP on a well equipped Cajun? I'm afraid to ask

The T6 turbo model is the fav for spirited drivers.

I wasn't a fan of the exhaust note. Sounded like a 10 year old Silverado with an air leak and broken muffler.

The MPG also turned me off -- stared at 17/24. AFAIK, worse for the turbo.

I've recently driven all of the competition and only the Volvo XC60 is a match performance wise. edit... turbo xc60

The XC60 was intuitive to drive but not as dynamic. The Volvo has better throttle response and active safety features. The X3 feels much more sporty to drive.

What about the Acura RDX redesign due out in a few months? 28 MPG highway, 3.5L 273 HP V-6, AWD (no longer SH)?

Should be competitive with the 28i but not the 35i.

Driving dynamics won't match the bimmer but it's bound to be reliable.

IMO the current RDX SH-AWD is fast and handles like it's on rails, but the economy and looks aren't that great. Also hydraulic steering provides much better feel, but eats at the economy.
