28d....Driving impressions
I am coming-up on lease end on my 2013 28i Xdrive which I had in for one of its final servicings. For a loaner the dealer gave me a newer X3 28d to drive.
I've previously owned a 2011 X5 35d and really liked the diesel experience in that vehicle. The torque, sound and it wasn't overly clattering or loud. Instant oomph. But in X3 guise? Much louder than the N20 in the interior of the vehicle Not much torquier than the N20 Very coarse acceleration So I was disappointed to say the least.. I guess the only advantage for someone like me living in the States would be the gas mileage...And maybe even that is close to the N20? And if I do the math for diesel fuel cost vs premium where I live? It may make little sense to go diesel. So for those in the market? Test drive it for yourself before plunking down the $$ would be my recommendation and watch out.

And as has been discussed previously, the "28d" in the US market is the older noisier N47 engine which - for the X3 - has been replaced by the much more refined B47 engine (as the 20d) in other markets. I agree with what's been said here - make sure you have a good test drive to ensure its what you can live with.

I am suprised that they fit two different Diesel engines on the same production line .. Surely that can't be very cost effective What is the reason ?

^The new engines have not been approved for use in the USA yet or else they would have put the new engine into the 3 series as well. They have to get through all the red tape that America puts on everything. It could be also they have stock of the N47 which they are trying use up.
