To stagger or not?

I purchased my M40i with the 19 inch all season tires knowing that I would probably use the factory 19 inch wheels for a dedicated winter set. I have now been slowly searching for a "summer" wheel. I have found a couple that the wife likes as it is her daily driver. I'm staying at 19 inch as she can grind wheels like no one else. I need as much tire around the wheel as possible. In addition, I want to get rid of the runflats as soon as possible.

The question is does it make more sense to stagger or leave the set square? I know the staggered setup certainly looks better and it may be my imagination that it handles better, but what would you do? I had a staggered setup on her 328i but it certainly does limit rotation options but in the end looked much better. Questions, Questions. Thanks in advance.

I'd get a squared setup since you can rotate easier and get more value on your setup. I would use spacers all around to get a more aggressive look and that way you get the best of both worlds.

I considered this myself, though I switched from 19" to 20". First, I know you didn't ask, but I would note that 20" still leaves quite a bit of sidewall and feels no less compliant than the 19" setup, at least if you went with adaptive suspension. It also gives you better tire options than 19".

In any event, I did quite a bit of digging and concluded that for an AWD SUV with 370hp, it's unlikely that there would be any performance benefit to having a staggered setup. If anything, there is probably a minor performance detriment from the extra unsprung weight. That said it looks kind of cool, and for the particular wheels/tires I was looking at, the staggered setup was actually slightly cheaper. So I ended up getting something staggered.

If you don't care too much about the aesthetics of it, probably better to stick with a square stance.

Stagger 21s in the Summer and Square 18s in the Winter.

I had a ‘17 X5 XDRIVE40E before my M40i and I would love my that the X3 would came with the 315’s in the rear like the X5. I miss those big ass tires.

Get staggered, makes a big difference with handling and makes the wheel setup look beast.

I've got 20's all round, rear tyres are wider and take out any body roll you'd get on a standard peasant square setup.

They certainly look cool, and for a rear wheel drive car could help acceleration, but I don't think I've ever heard anyone associate wider rear tires (with an associated increase in offset) with decreased roll. That doesn't feel like an intuitive relationship to me, but I may be missing something.

I bought my M40i with the 19" all-seasons and also bought a set of 718M 21" wheels for the summer.
