Dealer recommends wheel alignment every year?

We've taken our 2011 X3 3.5 SP into the dealer (Perillo) for it's 1 year scheduled service today. Everything is covered under warranty but they've recommended a wheel alignment (not wheel rotation) every year. Evidently BMW recommends it every two years, but the dealer says since we live 'in the city' they said it's best to do it every year so the tires wear evenly...Does anyone have any thoughts/experiences on this? The car has only about 8K miles...They want $170 for the service..

thanks in advance,

bobc

Wheel alignments are easy to do and super high profit margins so dealers try everything they can to get you to do them. You don't need a wheel alignment unless you are having a problem, simple as that. Depending on driving habit it is conceivable that you never need one.

You can easily tell if your tires are wearing unevenly or if your steering is shaking or pulling to one side.

Tell them, however, you want your blinker fluid changed every year. And to get on that, stat!

After I read your forum. I just happen to look at my tires and I noticed the two tires on the left side or cupping on the inside. The right ones are fine. I do rotate my tires every 5000 miles from front to back. I have 18000 miles on my X3. I guess I will get the front end aligned. Cheaper than tires.

Just got back from my wheel alignment. Yes the front and one of the back tires was out of alignment. One time alignment $89.95 and life time alignment for $129.95 up two twice a year as long as I own the car. Went with the life time. Maybe just wasted $40 but this way I don't have to worry.
