The new Range Rover Velar is featuring a fording depth of 24". I can't find where BMW lists the fording depth of the X3. In Houston, we get city streets flooding of 12" regularly, with more in some intersections. I ran my i3 thru one of these to get home with no stopages, but the high beam lights were flooded and needed to be replaced. Anyone know the fording depth spec of the X3?

From memory, the handbook says 19". I wouldn't like to try it though!

2011 manual says:

Driving through water
Drive though calm water only if it is not deeper than 11.8 inches/30 cm and at this height, no faster than walking speed, up to 6 mph/10 km/h.
Do not exceed this water depth and walking speed; otherwise, the vehicle's engine, the electrical systems and the transmission may be damaged.

I bet the X3 doesn't ford water as well as these vehicles...

Yes, when I lived in Australia and went bush in my Series 80 Toyota Land Cruiser with a snorkel, I got water up to the door handles. Had to be careful not to stall, though; because if I did water would back up thru the exhaust. Those National Guard trucks have elevated exaust exits. All the diff vents and trans vents in my LC were attached to hoses and run to engine compartment at highest level. I suspect that this is the limitation for the 12" for the X3--vents are at the top of the diffs. Rangie must have raised vent hoses. BMW could probably do better if vents were raised.
