Power Tailgate only closes half way

The power tailgate has always worked without a problem on my 2011 X3. Except for a little noise from the lifters. Now it opens without a problem but will only close about half way, then I need to manually close it. The problem exists if closed with the switch inside or on the tailgate.

I have looked for a problem but all I see is a broken ground wire between the body and the tailgate but can not imagine that is the problem.

Any ideas that would help?

My guess would be that one or both of the spindle drives is faulty. I had mine replaced under warranty. The hatch would close to about 80% and stop, requiring a manual push to close completely.

The broken earth strap is a common problem, and likely unrelated.

I expect you are right. Just was hoping it was something a little easier. Thanks.

Just to conclude, it turns out that one of the spindle drives was physically broken. Fortunately replaced under warranty.

+1 as they say.

So many people use these forums to explain about a problem they have (fair enough - that's what these forums are for), but it seems very not all follow up and let us know about the solution to the problem. Its all part of the shared experience.

I also facing this kind of problem with my X3.

At first, I notice the auto tailgate failed to close completely, and need manual push to close it. The cranky sound I thought because I occasionally open the tailgate, but the real problem is when it stuck halfway and jam.

Currently in BMW Service Center to further checking. Will update you guys what the main problem and how they solve it.

The problem solved by SC,

Apparently the absorber(if that's the part we call it) which push/pull the tailgate not align correctly, that cause the cranky sound and failed to close completely. After they fix it by re-align the absorber, no more cranky sound, and it open/close swifly with push of button.
