Sports mode question
If you move auto shifter to left and go into the mode where you see the "S6" etc gear, is that the same as engaging the sports mode button on the console, where you see ("D" sport) on dash, or if you do both you see ("S6" sport) on dash. Is this redundant? Could someone clarify.

If you put the shifter to the left, it will go into DS mode. If you don’t push the shift up or down to manually shift, it will shift by itself and stay in DS mode instead of the manual shift mode. Pushing the sport mode button will do the same as the DS mode plus it will stiffening up the steering wheel. If you have adaptive suspension, that will stiffen up in the sport mode as well.

When in normla mode, clicking the shifter to the left puts you in DS. This initiates a more aggressive shift pattern. Holds gears longer, downshifts sooner under hard breaking etc...
When you leave shifter in normal position and toggle to Sport mode, depending on your options you can have a few things happen. Steering tightens, DS shift patterns are engaged (same as just clicking shifter to the left), suspension firms up. So essentially, from a transmission perspective, the 2 are the same but you have the possibility of enahncing other variables when you toggle to sport mode. |

I also notice when you push sport mode button that throttle response is more aggressive and when shifter to the left, the auto start/stop is de-activated until you put it back to middle.

Whenever I'm entering the freeway, I always switch to Sport Mode & move the shifter to DS Mode as well. The response is really quick & it's fast enough that I seldom use the manual shifter.

What good does it do if you do both? Isn't turning on SPORT MODE enough?

I believe that it still does make a difference. Whenever I am in Sport/Sport+ and throw the gear selector to the left, the transmission shifts down. I'm pretty sure it holds the gears a little longer versus having the drive mode in Sport/Sport+ without having the gear selector to the left.

It seems to make a difference to toggle both to Sport and DS. From Comfort mode at a given speed, going into Sport will cause a downshift and then going into DS triggers a second downshift for me.

Agreed, if I'm in Sport via the button and move the stick to DS I get a downshift. I would be great if BMW could explain how all the modes work.

My 5-series works the same way, Sport Mode only gives one down change, at cruising sped, whereas flicking the gearstick to M/S gives another down change. Sport+ gives a double shift change at the same road speed. HighlandPete |

Maybe, since setpoints, logic, and available features, are now heavily determined by software and easily modified, BMW must be guarded in what they advertise. In the absolutely inane litigious world we live in, if the #$%*#%$# lawyers can find a way a woman can sue someone because she spilled hot coffee on herself, imagine what BMW would be up agaianst every time a software update changed a shift setpoint, available feature, etc.

What he said.
Depending on settings when you select sport mode the transmission will revise its shift patterns and be limited to 7 gears. 8th gear can be selected with the paddle shifter (if equipped) but the trans will revert to 7th gear if left in D. If you shift to DS and sport mode the shift pattern will be even more aggressive and (if I recall correctly) will still max out at 7th gear. While in DS the trans will maintain a selected gear until manually changed of you decrease vehicle speed.
