F25 X3 Tyre Wear

I have 20" wheels on my 35d and I am looking at new tyres. They are Pirelli PZero RFT and have only done 11,000 miles.

Is this normal mileage?

What's the best price anyone in the UK has seen for 20" 275/35?

Thanks in advance.

Andrew

Hi Andrew,

I have the same 20" tyres and have done almost 38000km ~ 23600 miles, with the rears almost on the tread wear indicators. You either drive your card hard or low tyre pressure ? What tyre pressures do you run with. In Aus recommendation is 40 PSI - slightly harder ride but better wear and handling.

Cheers..

Thanks Aaccon, I don't drive particularly hard (most of the time). Rear pressures are 35 which is what is recommended on the drivers door jamb.

I am very surprised at you needing new tyres at such a low mileage.

One quick question, is it even tyre wear across them all is or is it confined to a particular wheel or across the front or rears?

I replaced all mine at 22,000 miles! Albeit mine are 19" rims. This was a forced change because of puncture in a rear tyre that no tyre dealer would touch with a barge pole (repair) because of the Run Flat Tyre policy of some tyre manufacturers. I had a few thousand miles left on the rest and we estimated the set would have gone to 24,000 miles if they had been able run down to the wear indicators. Note of caution at this point. BMW (UK) recommend replacement of tyres at 3mm tread depth although the wear indicators are exposed at 1.6mm.

In the end I opted to purchase Pirelli NON Run Flats with BMW* rating, and carry the tyre repair/gunk kit. I also carry other temporary get you home inserts that can be purchased off ebay.

Before you purchase new tyres, I suggest you call in at your local main BMW garage and show them the tyre wear. I had a wear problem early in the car's life and advised them that I was not happy with the way the tyres were wearing. They did say there were no guarantees especially as in their view I had left it too long to complain, but in the end they gave me a good discount on the recognised BMW tracking procedure. I had this done and it showed there was a tracking problem.

When you are finally forced to purchase tyres, ensure you get BMW* tyres. It is also worth investigating the same tyres in NON RFT form. If you ring Black Circles UK, they have an excellent team who will give you a competitive price. You purchase from them and they sort out the dealership to fit and also the time and date to suit you.

Good luck.

I have 20" Pirelli P ZERO RFT:s, about to be exchanged. I had my sight set on Michelin MPSS, which seem to be Best In Class, but very expensive.

Checking a lot of tests with Ultra High Performance Tyres - which is what you get with "20" -I found out that Hankook has a tyre with very good performance - incl. very good performance in the wet, which is rumoured to be often existing in the UK - at a resonable price. They are in our sizes.

I donīt think you need a * (BMW) branded tyre, but 12V compressor and sealent, if not RFT.

You might think that, but it is a fact that if you have any problem with tyre wear or the car's transmission whilst it is under the normal 3 year warranty or the BMW Approved Used Car (AUC) warranty, the first query you get from BMW is " was the car running with BMW* rated tyres". I know this because I had a minor problem that was resolved and that was the first question that WAS asked.

Also Barnesy, if you do check out Black Circles (or any other tyre retailer in the UK for that matter) for price, check with your local BMW garage, because some will match the price of the tyre retailers. I received a call back from my local dealer saying he could match the Dunlop BMW* tyres from one seller, but by then I had already fixed the deal.

Thank you.

Thanks Peter_R. The wear is very even on the rear tyres, and also very even on the front tyres which still have a lot of life in them.

I will have a chat with the dealer, look at BlackCircles and also call my local tyre shop and see what the best prices are.

For safety's sake I am going to stick with RFT and *-marks.

I have a MY'13 with 49K miles and I'm about to replace my original 18" Goodyear Eagle LS-2's.

I'm considering:

Pirelli Cinturato P7 $216/tire
Bridgestone Potenza RE960AS $246/tire
Goodyear Eagle LS-2 $311/tire

Note these are All Season and V rated.

Before looking at this thread I was thinking of going with the Perelli's, but I never considered how long each tire might last. Does anyone know...did I just get lucky with my LS-2's or do they normally last longer?

Any other advice would also be appreciated.

My Pirelli PZero RFT's 19" lasted approximately 28k miles before I needed to change them (2.0D engine). I followed a couple of the guys on here and changed to non run flats (Pirelli P Zero) and the ride is far superior.
