It was the Best of Days and the Worst of Days. My Performance Center delivery.

Today I picked up my X3 35i, Deep Sea Blue, Oyster leather seats, Sports Activity Package, Cold Weather Package, HiFi radio, Sat radio, Park control and back up camara. My daughter and I had a great experience at the Performance Delivery Center. Well worth it if you can manage it!

Now for the worst of it. I drove home today after the delivery to Knoxville, Tn. On I-40 in the mountains of NC I ran into a hail storm. It could have been worse but I got about 6 noticable dings from the hail on my 2 hour old vehicle.

Here are some pictures before damage.

Hard to get pictures in the garage. Imagine one medium size ding and one small ding on hood, one small ding on horizontal area of passenger front quarter panel and two small dings on roof. Those are the ones I could find tonight. There might be more visible during daylight. The bigger one on the hood really hurts.

Uh, that makes me sick to hear. Sorry man.

See if you can find a good dent doctor shop in your area to do paintless dent repair. Your BMW dealer may have a recommendation. I have seen them do miracles, and they are especially good with hail damage. They took a couple dents out of a brand new WRX I had a few years back, and it seriously impressed the heck out of me -- and probably kept me from getting an ulcer. Best $250 I ever spent.

Thanks. That's what I plan on doing, the Paintless dent repair.
As soon as I started hearing the hailstones hit, I knew it wouldn't be good.

I'm sorry that truly sucks! That had to have been the worst feeling hearing the hail come down

So sorry to hear what happened on what was otherwise such a perfect day.

Hopefully you can find a good body shop that can take care of those dings quickly.

How big were the hailstones? Crikey, I've never heard of dings caused by hailstones before.

About 20 years ago Munich had a massive hail storm, virtually every car was peppered with dings, big ones. You do need a serious hail storm to do this...

Rotten luck for the OP

A major hail storm can have baseball size hail, monster dents and missing windows. Had a storm last fall that had hail go completely through the roofs of houses. I watch the weather radar pretty close but if you're on a trip not always much you can do. I was thinking about doing the PCD early on and wondered what the odds would be of running into a hail storm on the way back, as the SE states were getting hammered all spring.

Hopefully they are small enough the dentless works out.

That truly sucks. It just sucks the wind out of your sails, but try not to let it ruin the joy of the new vehicle experience. I agree with the advice of speaking to your dealer about a recommended dent repair guy. I had a sizable dent removed from a previous car with that method and couldn't tell where it was afterwards.

Also, consider calling your insurance company. Depending on the category and your deductible it should be covered.

I know that a major hail storm in Orlando, totaled over 1000 rental cars in the 90's. I had 3 dime sized dents in my BMW. If you are traveling and see a hail storm or hear of one nearby, get under somthing an overpass, tree any thing to slow down or protect you from the various sized hail stones. In fact the weather setting on my 3.5 radio connects with local NOAA radios and should provide you with precise warning.

The fast the better! The sheet metal has "memory". Dent guys have told me the quicker they can pop the dent out the better. The longer it sits the harder it is.

Talked to my dealer and a dent shop. They said it should be a relatively easy fix and not too expensive.

Sorry to hear about the hail damage. Hope it all looks good as new for you soon.

Like the Dickensian title and also like this photo in particular. Probably my favourite DSB pic. Fantastic

RxCritical - any update on finding a dent removal place and getting the dings removed? Hoping all goes well for your vehicle. That blue is absolutely beautiful! Keep us posted.

Yes, the dealer has set me up with their individual that does dent repairs for them. They highly recommend him and his price was very reasonable. He is backed up for a little bit since we had the bad hail storm in April. I should get it fixed in about 3 weeks I hope.
Thanks for asking! Paul
