Try it. It's really very nice. It's almost as linear and smooth as a naturally aspirated, torquey V-8, and it makes quite the sonorous, throaty, growl.
If you keep the car in Drive and use the paddle shifters you can obtain manual control of the transmission for a short period of time (a few seconds) before it automatically switches back to automatic. This would probably be useful for what you are describing.

I often start from 2nd gear when driving in manual as well... However I find there to be an annoying delay between when I stop at a stop sign (or other short stop period) and when it will let me shift to 2nd.

Did you go up the Angeles Crest highway in standard mode?

Believe me, you'll be learning the throttle for awhile.

totally jealous.

For some stupid and inconsiderate reason they will not let us option the steering wheel paddles to the Oz delivered cars.

Anyone know anyone in BMW NA who could pull some strings in week 38 when I know my VIN?

please?

I was visiting 1 Addicts reading through the threads and found this post.

It seems Brad135 was having some other problems with his car besides the so-called "turbo lag" and one of solutions was to update his software. He also briefly mentions a "chirp" from the brakes even when not braking later in the post and this seems similar to the "clunk" that some X3 owners have been complaining about. Pretty interesting read seeing as how 1 series owners are having similar problems to us X3ers.

This issue is definitely not related to the engine because I had the exact same issue with my 2007 X3. There were several service bulitens and I had it reprogrammed twice before I finally gave up. It was a 6 speed automatic transmission and the 3.0 NA engine. I used to start it in sports mode to get around the delayed response which would react exactly like everyone else on this thread has stated. I think it is just programming issues as they can't seem to get it right. I have a 335i 6 speed manual and there is zero lag and it has the HPFP. It has to be programming to maximize full economy.

It's still a fantastic drivetrain. I think it's worth a little discomfort. Think about the first time you drove run-flat tires. How annoying was the harsh ride? And if you're still happily driving a BMW, you probably got used to it.
It took BMW years to get the M3 DCT software to be fit-for-purpose. I'm sure they'll do the same with the X3 lag eventually.

One can change run-flats to normal tyres as part of routine servicing but the latest generation of run-flats are much better comfort wise.

I have recently upgraded the software on my 2011 X3 28i - 6 cyl.

The software eliminate the acceleration delay when drving at low speeds.
BMW Canada software P/N. 50183168 from PUMA.

Ask for software upgrade is free at dealer. This will improve the gear response.
