Rear Differential Bearing

Car was making a howling noise at the rear end and my mechanic says it is the carrier bearing in the rear diff. I've already replaced the wheel bearings and it's not that. I was wondering if anybody else came across this because as of now my options are to buy a new or a used rear differential. Has anyone else come across this and find aftermarket bearings for the rear diff because BMW will only sell you a whole new diff?

A buddy just trashed his front diff pinon carrier bearing. He managed to find a used diff for $600.

Is the noise happening all the time? I'm trying to figure out a howling noise when I come off throttle below 4K RPM.

I have not hear of a carrier bearing in the rear diff thats serviceable, not to say that its not true. I would investigate the "carrier bearing" in the center of the drive shaft and confirm with the mechanic that he knows the sound is coming from the differential and not the center carrier bearing of the drive shaft.
