Spark Plugs at 55K miles?

I have always been in a love/hate relationship with my dealer - Tully BMW in Nashua.

I needed an oil change and state inspection and when I drop it off, the SA says my spark plugs needed to be replaced at a cost of $425. Is he for real??? $425 for that?

Curious if spark plugs REALLY need to be replaced. This is the first time I've gotten service outside of the covered maintenance. I don't want to get the extended plan and I want to see if this place is steam rolling me!!!

If it's not misfiring , then no. If you don't want to deal with misfiring later at 60k or 70k then I would get it done now to save yourself the hassle in winter or on a road trip. The cost to DIY is not that much, BUT if you are not comfortable doing simple repairs then just pay to get it done. You could also buy them cheaper online at Tischer or ask them to price match the parts at least. That should bring the cost down.

The _35i usually needs it spark plugs replaced every 2nd oil change.

The early _28i needed them every oil service till NGK developed upgraded plugs, now its back to every 2nd oil service

Let's see $425 for $120 worth of plugs. That works out to about $300 per hour for labor. Not that difficult of a job, at least on the 28i. After doing it the first time i could probably do it a second time in less than 30 minutes. How to's have been posted by myself(28i) and Mposter(35i) in you need instructions.

I changed mine at about 59K miles. Could see the gap was smaller on new plugs. Performance was better after change and average MPG increased two tens per mile.

I wanted to post this earlier but couldn't find it at the time. I hope this helps with forecasting future cost of maintenance .

Oil service 10,000miles
Oil service 20,000miles
Inspection1 30,000miles
Oil service 40,000miles
Oil service 50,000miles
InspectionII 60,000miles
Oil service 70,000miles
Oil service 80,000miles
Inspection1 90,000miles
Oil service 100,000miles

Inspection1 covers inspection of leaks and levels of fluid as well as component wear . They also change the oil .

InspectionII covers everything in inspection I but also covers replacement of cabin microfilter. Road test of brakes. Replace spark plugs. Replace engine air filter.
( at every second inspectionII change oil in transmission and rear axle and check for clutch wear)

Brake fluid every 2 years

Cooling system service
Replace coolant every 3 years

Replace oxygen sensors every 100,000 miles.

That's about what my dealer wanted for the same job. Take a look at this DIY and see if it's something that you want to tackle yourself, or perhaps farm out to an Indy shop.

My X3 will be turning four in July. Just had it at the dealer for it's last covered oil change. Dealer says they no longer do "inspection II's". So over the last four years I've had 4 oil changes, brake fluid change, new wiper blades and cabin filter changed. Amazing how they keep doing less and less.

That list is very old and for early Exx cars.
There are no more "Inspections" or "oil change" lists. Its all CBS servicing now
Coolant in now also lifetime, no longer 3 years.

CBS will call for
Oil
Brake fluid
Microfilter
Vehicle check
Spark plugs
Brake pads
Fuel filter
Engine Air Filter
at varying intervals depending on market and driving conditions.

Here microfilters are changed at every oil service, while in the USA its often every 2nd oil service.

Brake fluid called for every 2 years
Vehicle check will be called for every 4 years

Fuel filters every 2nd oil service
Spark plugs every 2nd oil service
Engine AIr filter ever 2nd oil service

"Inspection II" items covered in CBS when they are required.

All you dont get anymore that older generations got is a coolant change every 2 or 3 years.

Looked up US F25 35iX intervals

From 07/2013 production

Microfilter every 2nd oil Service
Engine air filter every 5th oil service
Spark plugs every 6th oil service

So a bit different to Euro schedules

Just had mine in for service at 60k yesterday (2011 35). The plugs were done under the factory maintenance program, at no charge.

I too had the plugs replaced @ 60k miles (3 weeks ago). I found and purchased the plugs online, ~$11 a piece don't remember where now. the dealer replaced them for $150.

the plugs looked okay, nice and grey on 4 of the 6 plugs, the other 2 were not, a bit more darker in color. I asked the tech after looking at them but he didn't remember which plugs came from which cylinders.

the car definitely runs smoother and the butt dyno feels a bit more pep. gas mileage has increased a few tenths, nothing major.

it is boat season now, so gas mileage is going to suck for a few more months.
