What's the deal with the chrome side markers

Took delivery of a 35i MSport, but damn the chrome side markers seem like such an after thought. Why bother moving the turn signals to the mirrors? Anyone thought of putting back the signal markers and wiring it up or paint matching it?

We have a 2011 and I'm glad it has functioning side markers. I always notice the newer X3's with the chrome bump on each side and I wasn't noticing them in a good way. Definitely look out of place. I think they should have smoothed that section in when they moved the markers to the side mirrors.

Trying to retrofit the older indicators would probably be a serious pain. From running wires to tapping into ECU and the need to code would be not worth it.
