Has anyone changed the timing chain themselves?
So I bought the kit at FCP Euro and plan on getting all the tools. I was pretty much prepared to do it myself after watching the FCP Euro 2 part video on changing the timing chain for an N20 engine.
But that video shows it on a 3 series, not an x3 I asked FCP about the X3 and the response was: For the timing chain service on your X3, unfortunately in order to remove the oil pan (to access the oil pump drive module), you will have the additional task of lowering the front sub-frame. In order to remove the oil pan, you will have to remove at least remove the passenger side axle, as the front passenger axle goes through the oil pan. For those that attempted this themselves or just in the know, is this accurate? I really don't want to mess with the subframe! Yikes. |

Yes, that is 100% accurate. This is a major job.

If you "don't want to mess with the subframe" take it somewhere for the service

I've swapped the engine on my e46 before so have some experience. Lowering the subframe is something I haven't done before and since the engine sits on it, I probably don't have the proper equipment anyway. Guess I might have to take it somewhere. Bummer.
