BIMMERPOST

Quote:
BMW's new coupé-syled crossover contender, the X4, is a new entry to the sports SUV market. Can the new upstart really rival the Porsche Macan, which has been received as one of the best compact SUVs ever? Steve Sutcliffe finds out.

i don't think the Macan has enough buttons in the center console.

I am afraid that steering in the X4 is not up to my standards. Still waiting for mine with 20" and adaptive dampers. Borrowed a DEMO with 19" and no adaptive dampers - not as good as my MY1997 SAAB 9000 with 18".

This is a good review for the X4 30d. I am surprised it compared this well to the Macan S Diesel.

If the comparo was an X4 35i fully loaded vs Macan S with Torque Vectoring and Sport Chrono, I think the Macan would be far superior.

Objective review, and based on the results, prefer the Macan for style most important performance. Aside from it's performance cannot understand the rational behind BMW offering the X4.

No surprise here, Macan is the Cayenne of small SUVs. Simply the best.

That SAAB is a GM product, w/hydraulic most likely but regardless the comparison is ridiculous and you will hate the SAAB once your xCar arrives.

There's a guy that works near my office that owns new Macan, it looks like an smaller an uglier Cayenne.
Maybe there's a lot of people out there that wants a "smaller" SUV, but to me the Macan is just a Porsche built for who can't buy a Cayenne.

The X4 it's the same thing compared to an X6, but it look even worse...

Not true, the Macan is a more practical Porsche car, and the Cayenne is a full on SUV.
And you can easily spec a much more expensive Macan than Cayenne, give it a try in the configurator.

I heard on NPR, Porsche, which 85% of its buyers are male, is trying to appeal more to female buyers with the macan.

I thought Porsche borrowed the Q5 platform and then tooled it for performance, whereas the SQ5 is Audi's version of that. I would think in real-world use, they would be different enough to test head to head. Is that not the case? Are they exactly the same?

Maybe just me, but I'm cross shopping these vehicles right now, and performance-wise, I would take the Macan, exterior styling - the SQ5, and interior - the X4.

That said, the X4 is a distant 3rd overall - just don't get the overall design or that cargo space-cutting sloped roof.

We're specifically looking for something the size of a Q5/Macan/X3 because the full size SUV's are overkill for us. We would prefer a proper performance wagon, but the E350 AMG is about the only good option out there and we're not ready/willing to move over to MB just yet.

If only Bimmer would gift us here in the States with an M5 wagon, or even a 335i... :'-(

While i detest 'performance' SUVs in general from any brand, i actually kind of like this Porsche tractor:
