E83 3.0D Turbo failure - Help needed!

It suddenly wouldn't do more than 2000rpm and the engine oil light came on. The AA have looked at it and believe the turbocharger has gone. Firstly, could there be any other likely cause other than the turbocharger? Secondly, how easy are they to replace? Finally can you refurbish a turbo or do you just replace? Many thanks, Alex
