Replace Rear Tires - Tread Difference
Hi All -
I have been reading several posts today and it seems there are mixed opinion on the topic so wanted to hear your thoughts given my tire measurements. I’m running AS3+ All Seasons, and looking to replace my rear tires. Car is staggered 245/40/20 and 275/35/20 tires from factory. Fronts are at 6/32nds, and new rears would be at 10/32nds. Full tread, the difference seems to be about 0.4% (fronts are marginally bigger). I believe the math is in my favor to just replace the rears vs going to a set of four new tires? Any input is appreciated. Alternative is replacing all 4 with AS4, but that is about twice the cost. Thanks in advance!

See attachment....this is from the BMW TIS (Tech Info System)- so max. difference between front and rear tires is 2mm TREAD DEPTH. Your difference would be 7.9mm - 4.8mm = 3.1mm.
I'd say go for the new rears only; rears wear faster than the fronts. Your call, good luck / Bill |
