What would you all do? CA messed up my car order

Hi all
I ordered a 2013 Carbon Black X3 35i on March 2nd, the BMW website finally uploaded my car yesterday. The start build was 3/12/12 and I noticed it right away on 3/13 night. so 2 full days of building the car. Only problem is they ordered with the SILVER roof rails instead of the normal high gloss black roof rails in which i wanted. i never mentioned to the CA I wanted the silver roof rails and my work order form did not state silver roof rails. The default option on the BMW website is HIGH GLOSS BLACK when ordering the M package as i did. I wanted to have a black on black theme for this car and this totally throws it out the windows i feel. I would assume the CA OR MANAGER went click happy and checked off the wrong box on the computer.

1) who finalize the car order? is it the CA or the manager of the dealer? i would assume the CA prints/enters the order request then the manager has to review the order and give the final approval in the system. I would hate for the CA to get in any trouble for this as he is a nice HONEST person and made the sale easy going with no pressure.

The manager just called back at 5:20 today even tho i called them twice right when they opened at 9am and again at 10 then finally at 4pm. OF COURSE my CA was not in the office today. She stated they can not change the order as its already been done with the silver rails. I told her i can wait for another build slot as i dont really want this car with the silver rails if that is at all possible seeing as the 2014 are starting to be built real soon. Manager stated she is still working on it and hope is not all lost yet.

What would you guys do? how much of a discount would you guys ask for if they can not give me a new build slot, since it is clearly the dealer who caused the mix up.

Would have been nice if they had checked off the premium sound package instead lol.

Thanks for your replies

I'd say the first thing to figure out before talking to them again is how important the roof rails are to you. If they give you a discount or something, will you be happy with the silver rails? If so, you could aim for after market stuff like the tire warranty for the run flats, the coatings you might not want to pay for yourself (mine worked out well, to my surprise), or maybe a set of Winter or Summer tires. If you won't be happy with the silver rails, keep pressing them to see what they can do. I'd not be mad, I'd be profoundly disappointed and see what they offer up.

Agreed. Did you buy the car or lease it? If buy, this may be a blessing in disguise by just getting a 2014 build slot, may work out best financially in the end going that route.

I'm buying the car cash, not leasing it. I just want a win win for everyone. Not looking to get a better deal on anything or making the dealer lose a profit. I really hope they can give me a new build slot.
My wife suggest I ask for the tire warranty for half off since I was planning on buying it anyways. Full price is $1450. That way the dealer still makes some profit (i think) on the tire warranty and I can get a discount on something I was looking to buy anyways. But I think asking it for $750 is abit too much. Wish I knew how much of a profit they make on these warranties. I want the black rails but I can live with the silver just wouldn't be 100% happy about it.
I was planning on buying the black kidney grills and go for the black on black look but this silver rail doesn't help.

Who do u think is more at fault? The manager or the CA? I like the CA alot as the car buying process went real smooth and would hate to get him in any trouble. I figure the CA enters/prints in the car order then the manager has to review the order to make sure everything matches then finally hit the "ok" on ordering the car. I can't imagine they would just let the CA place $30,000 and up car orders without anyone also looking it too. There has to be a checks and balance when placing such expensive orders.

Thanks for your replies.

sometimes that status of the car online is not 100% accurate it may show different color, different options or missing items. once the vin is assigned then i believe it clears up and u see what you order. if you order msport package it includes high gloss black rails.

i forgot to add the roof rails when i placed the order,i regret it and i wouldnt be able to get it in black, it would be silver rails. Unless i can order them on getbmwparts.com which they have roof rails kit

Just got the call from my CA. He said he is 99.9% sure it's black as the work order does not state silver rails at all. But he won't know for sure till it comes in. Said the BMW website is wrong. I really hope he's right.

The order process is the CA enters the order, then we both review it, and both of us sign off on it (we both have a copy of the work order) and then the manager looks it over again before placing the order to Spartenburg.
Thanks all for your replies. I'll keep u updated.

Have your CA pull up your build sheet on their computer

It will list all of the options that were sent to the factory. if the build sheet doesn't have the silver roof rail option, then you are good to go.

The website is not very accurate (not sure why - this is easy to do from an IT perspective). They had my color wrong for the first 2 weeks, then showed some incorrect options for a while (including silver rails if I recall), and were still showing my truck as being built the day I got the call from my CA saying the truck had arrived at the dealership.

Just wanted to add another post saying that the site is usually wrong on small details like that.

They really need to get a better site manager as ive seen this exact issue cause most future owners fits when they see their options list on the site is wrong and then get told by the CA that the site is incorrect and the car will be as expected. Im sure CA's get annoyed by the calls as well, not because the customer is so concerned but because its such a simple thing that BMW could fix on their site to keep the CA's from getting those calls and the customer from fretting over it not being as ordered.

Mine are silver on my 2013 X3 M Sport. I wanted them silver. I think they have a problem on the website with this particular option being an issue because they were showing as black for a while on the site. I had to call my CA to confirm that the car was going to be delivered as silver.

At least in Feb-2012 when I placed my order and also checked the web site, it came up checked black by default but silver could be checked (and black would then be automatically unchecked).

I believe there is a retrofit kit for the roofrails, no? If so your dealer should just correct their error and fit the black rails. On the other hand, my wife's X3 is black with the silver rails and I think it looks pretty sharp - definitely a different look than you were going for, but the silver rails aren't half bad. If you can get something else in exchange and be happy with it, then go for it. The one thing you shouldn't do is shell out $50k on something you're not happy with!

The satin silver aluminum rails can easily be removed by a BMW body shop and painted black.

It is always good practice to check your order carefully and be quite specific in writing as to what you are specifying. Wanting an option and specifying an option are two different things completely. Let the buyer beware.

UPDATE: the dealer was incorrect, Im guessing they had clicked off the silver rails and didnt realize it. The BMW website was correct... that being said they were able to find another build slot for my car and build me a new one without taking hold of this current into their inventory. Im glad it was a win, win for every one. It only caused a 1 week delay which i can live with.

Thanks again all for your replies

First of all, carbon black is an excellent choice - that color rocks. I also remember having a few glitches in the order system after I ordered mine, but everything came the way it was supposed to, so I'm pretty optimistic that your rails will in fact be black.

If they do come back silver, do not accept delivery of the car. You are writing a big-a$$ check for this car and the dealer is responsible for getting it right. Doesn't matter if it was the CA, the manager or the engineer at the factory that got it wrong. Remember, you are the customer. If you refuse delivery, they will figure out how to fix it or get a build slot from another dealer. If they do swap out the rails, make sure they get the factory powder coated rails and don't simply paint yours black.

Even if they give you some discount to accept silver rails, it will bug you every time you look at the car for the entire time you own it. Is that worth $750 to you?? And by the way, with the tire warranty - if you say no, they knock it down to like $1000. I'm pretty sure the warranty costs the dealer like $400 or $500 and it's almost all profit. There are other posts on this site about cheaper alternatives.

Good luck! But remember, it is their problem until you accept delivery, and their responsibility to make it right.

since they'll have both in inventory, put them side by side to see which one you like better, make sure you compare them outdoors, my choice would be satin rails

My choice would be black rails. This build is trimmed out in black.

To add additional insights here. I ordered out 2013 X3 2.8i Carbon Black with silver rails in December 2012 and noticed that sometime in the past few months the default option for the Carbon Black began showing me silver instead of the high gloss black.

It could be that the CAs are unware of this change and didn't realize that it must be changed in order to receive the black.

I'll also say IMHO that it looks awesome with in the sunlight with hints of blue and silver rails. However, it's personal choice and you should be able to get them to rectify to the way you want.
