AlloyGators
Dear all - just a word of warning really. I had AlloyGators fitted to my 2014 X3 earlier this week - done professionally by an approved fitter. I have 19" M Sport wheels and All-Season tyres, as per BMW spec. Well unfortunately 3 days in, three out of the four AlloyGators have started to work their way out of the wheel. One is really bad, and two are on the way out, leaving them twisted slightly. Real shame as I was looking forward to no more dmaaged wheels, but fitter coming tomorrow to take all four out. Just wanted to let you all know in case anyone else is thinking of it. Apparently not all tyre/wheel combos work well with them, and clearly I was one of the unlucky ones! Perhaps more trouble than they're worth? The sort of rims you would most want to protect (the larger M Sport ones namely) are exactly the ones that are less likely to work well with the system.

It's not as simple as that. It's not just the curb that damages wheels in the UK - we have a large amount of potholes and it is generally these that cause damage to the edge of my rims. They are unavoidable.

Are your wheels staggered 19" as I am really interested in what your tires are. I cannot find all season tires for mine. Also I am not sure what AlloyGators are - I would be interested in seeing a photo.
Thanks! Ian |

They are Pirelli PZeros. I was told they were all-seasons by the dealer, but I see when I look them up that they are Performance (Which I presume means summer). Oh well! I guess your hunt continues!

Just googled these things. Seems hard to imagine that they can protect rims from damage caused by potholes. Given road conditions here, I gave up on 19'' and mounted 18" instead.

OP, I think you should count yourself lucky they don't fit.
I had never heard of these. Looking them up, it seems they are something that makes a nice looking rim look ugly in the hope of protecting the rim from damage that would make it look ugly. Seems to guarantee the very thing it tries to prevent! I used to run 19" rims with 35 sidewalls on my 3 series coupe.....had to be careful, but not issues. I can't imagine my 18" rims with the huge SUV sidewalls being problematic. |
