No. But it will eventually shut itself off.

You can hold it down until hell freezes over. BMW has eliminated this feature.

The wipers move when not in use for a while in an effort to prevent the blades from sticking to the windows. this is by design.

Another time saver for cars with the auto box is that pressing the on/off button automatically switches the gearbox to <P> mode - you don't need to do this first. Might be common sense to many but I've got years of habit of putting the car in neutral before turning the engine off.

On a related theme, does anyone know if keeping hold assist on all the time has any impact on economy or general wear and tear?

I wouldn't think so. Hold assist (auto park) simply applies the brakes (the hydraulic brakes via ABS) rather than the parking brake. It's the same as sitting at a traffic light with your foot on the brake.

Winner!
I had a Golf 5 GTI 5 years ago that used to do this for the same reason. Its the same with the x3.

My 2010 Audi A4 does this as well. If you think about it, your wipers spend most of the time in the Off position (unless you live in Seattle). The rubber will eventually get misshapen on the side which is constantly pressed against the window. This helps prevent that from happening.

It's a German thing, and it's a good thing.
