Miles on Full Tank of Gas

I have a 2011 35i and when you fill up your tank, the car tells you how many miles you have to drive until empty. I remember in the past, it would go up to the low 400's, but now the max I get on the display is ~360 miles after I put in a full tank. In reality, I never get near those numbers, but I wonder why it appears like I'm getting less mileage per tank over time. Has anyone else noticed this in their car? Is it simply a matter of needing to do an oil change?

your avg MPG has dropped down due to more spirited driving. As you scroll through the menus on the left stalk you'll see the avg come up. hold the button down to reset it, this will start the avg MPG process all over. just drive very moderately and in no time you;ll see it will say 400 miles when you fill up

It really does come down to personal preferences, but I as a matter of routine always reset the trip computer (both fuel economy and average speed) with every fill and note down the numbers.

Not wanting to gloat or anything - because I'm sure there will be those who have done better - but after a recent long steady drive, upon filling the tank the distance-to-empty for the first time ever was over the magical 1,000 km mark (1,076km or 668 miles) with the 30d diesel. Should have taken a picture.

583 miles for 15.3 gallons last February returning from Colorado. So I could have made 1000 kms.

I managed just over 710 miles from my last tank.
It happened to be 99% motorway driving and I was in no hurry so sat at a constant 75mph.

How much can the tank actually hold?
Just that I filled up and got 65 litre in as well, I thought it was a 67 litre tank, and presumed you would get another litre or 2 in the filler neck as well?
So reckon I could have got another 50 miles out of it if I had dared.

Yes same here Tony! However, I use Fuelly to record the mileage and the fuel quantity put in and over a period of time I get the actually figures presented to me in the form I want.

See ...... http://www.fuelly.com/dashboard

What are you going on about now?

MPG =

Some days you hypermile and get great figures, the next day you think 'Oh forget that, I'm going to enjoy myself!!' and hammer it every where and watch your average plummet.

I know exactly what your game is Peter. It's boring mate.

I have driving like daisy days mostly on motorways and of course on other days with the 3 litre it is easy to boot it in and out of traffic and get poor consumption, just like our run from Milton Keynes up around Thrapston and Kettering on the back roads last week. That is why my average is between 36.1 mpg and 42.5 mpg with my Fuelly average of 39.2 mpg.

Yes definitely boring. I suggest you stop reading into posts negative things that are not there.

On my trip from Hungary to Holland and back I drove over 3500 km, last week.
(My computer indicates about 700km with a full tank.)
I used an average of 9,7 liter / 100km . This is about 29 mpg (Imperial).
Not bad, considering I really did not drive like captain slow, with speeds up to 220 km/h (135 mph) and revving it to 6.000 rpm sometimes.

When I drive more like a normal person, around my home town, the car uses about 8,6 liters/100 km , which is about 34 mpg (imperial). I have no problem with that.

Haha, whish it was! No I am just driving the 2.0i. It is enough for me, but it doesn't make the X3 into a racing car. Which is not why I bought it of course. And as you see, the fuel consumption of the 2.0i is rather low.

I get 400-450 miles per tank, have seen 500+ for a 3.0d running 300+bhp, I'm happy with that.

Update: 450-500 miles from full to light on , so not empty...

Yup, me too and I'm happy with that. I bought it for the power, not the economy

Interesting, that is about what I get from our 2.0T A4 Avant. Averaging about 33mpg, mainly around town. Sat at 110kmph I see around 7.5l/km, sat at 140kmph it drops to around 9 l/km, quite a difference.

Have you considered a remap for your 28i?

My 2.0T is mapped and the difference is huge on it, more so than any diesel I have had, which I tend to tune. Having said that, our 20d has taken very well to a bit of tuning.

I hope they offer a petrol engine going forward in the UK, even a petrol hybrid on the next model.

With Mercedes doing the GLC 350e I bet they will. The C350e is sold out here, stopped taking orders at the moment as demand is too high. So it is going to be the future I guess. More things to worry about when the warranty ends.

I am certainly thinking of a chip tuning, but I am scared about causing damage to the engine, and I am not sure whether I will keep the full BMW warranty..... after all the car is just 4 months old now.

This is what I am using on mine.

http://www.diesel-performance.co.uk/...245-ps-(petrol)

I have always been an advocate of a proper remap, however, on my E Class I had the Brabus box which is similar, as in it plugs into the turbo as well as the fuel rail and I got stunning results, very linear, and great gains. So when I got the 20d I decided to try the CRD-T+ box as it is the same principle.
I really can't rate it highly enough.

Don't get me wrong, I am not knocking remaps, I think they are great, but not sure most of the generic maps are even as good as some of these modern boxes.
Get a custom map and they can be brilliant though.

But if you just want to take it to the next level and have something you can remove easily these are great.

Ask them for the certificate number for their TUV

I'm a remap man too although boxes do have their place as long as they are of a good standard...

They have come a long way from the boxes of old for sure
