CPO - Lease buyout

Looking at buying my 2011 X3 3.5 at lease-end as I think I have some positive equity (and relatively low miles) and I can use it for my daughter to drive. Dealer has "offered" to CPO it and their estimate is $5,600. I think I'm getting hosed (and they're trying to make a meal off of me) for a 2 year extension. At that price, I'll evaluate reliability over the 4th year of covered warranty/maintenance and then "self-insure" for the cost of repairs after that.

Any thoughts/experiences?

I dont think the dealer can "CPO" the car, but they can offer you a two year extension. (I may be wrong on this because a lot has changed with CPO over the last year or so, but previously unless the car was returned to the dealer and then purchased again, it couldnt be "CPO"). Anyway, 5,600 seems way too high for a two year warranty. Do your research and call around - the warranty can be purchased at any dealer.

You can purchase your lease turn-in from BMW and they can CPO it, just like any other car that qualifies as they treat it like a purchase. In the process they're trying to ignore my below market buy-out and charge me market price for 2011 CPO X3 (vs. just adding the CPO cost on top of my buyout.

My residual/buy-out is $30,030, plus 2 more payment and they're asking $37,100 to CPO and sell it to me. Loaded X3 3.5 (Sport, X-line, with 36k miles).

One option is to bank the $5600/$7070, go "at risk", and use the banked money for any required repairs over the next 2 years.

Agreed as per my orginal post. "At that price, I'll evaluate reliability over the 4th year of covered warranty/maintenance and then "self-insure" for the cost of repairs after that."

From what I've heard the CPO on a vehicle costs the dealer $2-3000 depending on the model. $5600 is outrageous.

Thanks. That would be a lot more reasonable. I may check another dealer to see what they say.

You should consider a third party warranty at that price- particularly if you're not all that concerned with resale.
