holding off due to gas prices?

Is anyone thinking about holding off a purchase due to gas prices? I am thinking that my perfectly good car that is paid off isn't so bad as I can easily adapt to higher gas prices. Would be nice if the new X3 had better mileage....similar to the 2.0d they have in Europe.

You only live once. Why stress about something like gas prices? You're going to pay one way or another.

I did the math and found out that between my wife and I, we're only paying about $40 more a month to fill up. Yeah, it's frustrating, but I'm not going to let it ruin my day. Prices will settle down again by summer. Then they'll go up again. And then down a little once more.

Here's my advice to people who are upset about the "pain at the pump." Invest in oil futures.

assuming you are comparing gas at $4 a gallon, and $3.25 a gallon
the difference is $47 a month (assuming you fill up every monday)
not i don't know about most people on this forum
but i can blow that on one meal
am i really going to hold off on buying a new car, something that gives me tons of enjoyment, for $47 a month???

Very accurate statement man, if $40 a month means buying a new car or not then the budget is being really stretched. Although I could understand someone wanting to get a car that has better mpg as no one is sure what the prices will be down the road but overall the X3 gets pretty decent mileage and is pretty close if not the same as most sedans. Plus I doubt the gas prices are ever going to go down more than a couple cents, if anything now is the best time to own a SUV or SAV in BMW's case than ever.

what winds me up even more is people who say, your car is nice but you can't use regular gas
i tell them seriously?
the diff between reg and prem is about 20 cents
assume the avg tank is say 15 gallons
that's 3$ per tank difference, that's a nice packet of gum

is that really a deciding factor between cars?

It's actually not quite that high yet if you're comparing with the US because they use US gallons (3.8L). £1.33/litre is then $8.2/US gallon.

A 4$ US gallon means they are paying $4.8 for an imperial gallon or 65p/litre. Can you remember when we paid about 60p/litre? Happy days!

Well if they change the 28i to the new turbo 4 for 2012 models maybe it is worth waiting 6-7 more months. 20% or better mpg than the current engine.

Isn't that what Audi's doing for years? BMW's has been adding turbos to engines in the last couple of years. From what I've heard there will be a new 2-liter engine with a turbocharger in order to meet the CAFE regulations in 2014, the engine will be available to most base engines.

As I can imagine this being so, apparently the 1-Series coupe will has a FWD system and 2 liter w/ turbocharge so take it with a grain of salt.

The new turbo 4 with 245 hp and 258 torque. It's going to be the base engine for anything under a 7 series in the US within 2-3 years. Problem is it looks like they are only changing a couple cars a year. 2012 models might just be the X1 and Z4. Although that will piss all X3 28i owners off in the US since currently it gets the same MPG as the 35i. The new engine is supposed to get 30 mpg combined in the X1 (US figures), so probably 27-28 in the X3. This engine option would make me think twice before getting a 35i as performance is supposed to be excellent as well. You can read about it on bimmerpost past articles.

I always say: "if you can afford a premium vehicle you should be able to afford the premium gas and fluctuations in gas prices, if you can't you are doing something wrong".

May sound snotty but there are times when I have scaled back and driven cars that are more economical and times when I can enjoy a BMW.
