Replace 18" TPM rims with 17" NON-TPM

Hello everyone ... after some research I'm trying to resolve some doubt about purchasing a new set of snow tires + rims (304) that I would like to get on my new X3: the standard car is fitted with 308 rims (with tire pressure monitor - TPM) and runflat tires, can I mount NON runflat winter tires on 17" rims (304) WITHOUT TPM, or the iDrive signals the failure? Can I temporarily disable the sensor (up to replacement of summer tires in spring)?

Thanks in advance

The new X3 doesn't use a sensor for TPM.

It uses the ABS system's wheel RPM monitor to detect flat tires. So any rim that fits onto the wheels should do, I think. Just be sure to recalibrate it in iDrive when you swap the tires.

Ok, but take a look to the user's manual, pag 82 and 83 http://dl.dropbox.com/u/169832/2011_...ith_iDrive.pdf :

"The system must have been reset when the inflation
pressure was correct; otherwise, reliable
signaling of a flat tire is not ensured. Always use
wheels with TPM electronics
to ensure that the
system will operate properly."

and

"The system does not operate correctly if it has
not been reset. For example, a flat tire may be
indicated despite correct tire inflation pressures.
The system is inactive and cannot indicate a flat
tire:
For a mounted wheel without TPM electronics.
▷ When the TPM is disturbed by other systems
or devices with the same radio frequency."

Where did you hear that the X3 had changed to a ABS speed based system?

My X3 (USA production) definitely has TPM sensors in the wheels. They are at a different frequency than the pre-2010 TPM sensors. This from a forum member who found the "old" (pre-2010) sensors would not work and had to have his winter tires removed, the new sensors switched, and the tires re-mounted.

The iDrive interface, at least at the "customer access" level does not allow turning off the TPM warning, so using wheels without functioning TPM sensors will give a "tire pressure fault" warning. It's possible that a dealer may have access to software tools that could override that, but unlikely a dealer would risk the liability of doing so if a customer requested it.

Update:
TireRack confirms that ALL 2011 3-Series BMW's, not just the X3, use the new sensor. They claim they currently have the correct sensors in stock.

I asked a friend who is a BMW service manager about this. Most dealerships will deactivate this for you. It's an easy fix.
