Awesome post, So to be clear if I have S609 Nav Professional I only need the following :

1 - Purchase a wifi antenna [ Part # 61119278133 ]
2 - Purchase a USB w/ the software to avoid the crazy $300 BMW wants?

Can someone PM me if they sell or know where to acquire the software?

I checked and the cheap Chinese WiFi antennae seemed to be the same connector as the oem version so I went for one of them. The fitting was pretty straight forward although removing the radio/ac panel took a lot more leverage than I would have liked.

For anybody else doing it, start from the bottom and use a firm plastic tool to get it off.

Good to know, I have to order the antenna asap... Coding car-play worked like a champ just the wifi is extremely spotty... Any small move and it cuts out which im positive is from just having the super basic antenna vs the dedicated one.

If you don't have one of option above:
06CP Preparation Apple CarPlay
06NW Telephony with wireless charging
06WD WLAN Hotspot

For 99% you are missing WiFi Antenna.
CarPlay or Screen Mirroring can be added if you don't have this options and you have 0609 which is Professional Navigation and if you have problems with connection, reception etc. WiFi Antenna would help.

That was my case. My G01 doesn't have any of that options, so I decided to retrofit WiFi Antenna (which is BIG to say it's retrofit, since it takes 10-15 minutes to install it). CarPlay and Fullscreen was already activated by me so it was only matter of Antenna.

I bought cheap Antenna at China - famous Ali site
Just look for "FAKRA WIFI BMW". It was like 3 USD and 3 USD for shipping.
If you want OEM option, you can go with it - 61119278133 part no.

I used this guide to remove headunit - https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/g...nit/1VnbgcYJTA

And WiFi Antenna connects to the 9 connector at the picture above.

I put WiFi Antenna behind Headunit and it was perfect place for it.
This one cheap on buy has long cable but it was tied so I left it as it was.

Perfect and stable connection even on the back seat and outside the car

Here are some pictures of installing it. Took me like 10 minutes - but i'm not doing it for the first time. You need plastic tool, and some Torx Wrench. Pretty easy and straightforward. If you guys have any questions, let me know.

I’m going to do this with my X4 G02 as soon as the antenna arrives. I had CarPlay programmed a few months ago but the connection was hit and miss at the best of times and now isn’t working at all - won’t let me connect my phone whatsoever.

When installing, do I need to disconnect the battery in the first instance?

Smile 2018 X3 - Carplay randomly disconnects

Hello,

I've installed the carplay by my self via OTD cable and works OK.

However, WiFi is a little spotty, and the connection gets randomly interrupted.

The connection sometimes lasts for hours, sometimes goes on and off...

I've been told that my car is missing the WiFi antenna, but in the media settings, I have the Vehicle WiFi tick enabled. (Pic attached)

Does that mean that my car already has the antenna?

I'm wondering if that WiFi dedicated just to the hotspot or it's used for the carplay too...

If so, how can I fix the connection issue?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Hello...
I just enabled CarPlay, and had the same issue, WiFi option was turned on but could not connect the phone ... I ordered the OEM antenna and followed the steps described in previous posts, on how to install It... mine didn’t have the antena and after plugin it everything is working just fine ...
hope it helps!

Does anyone have CarPlay working in the X3 without adding the antenna? What if the phone is right by the AC vent with a mag mount - would that keep the connection solid? Also - does anyone have a recommendation of someone to remote code to activate CarPlay and making it full screen?

Hey,
Usually it’s better to add WiFi antenna but sometimes you could get it working without it.

Thanks!

Probably the best place to have your phone if you don't have the antenna is the cover of the console, so it is close to the head unit. Maybe the vent holder would also work, I just don't like those.

Agree, I don't have antenna, and definitely best to keep phone on console cover for best chance of a signal. Had a magnetic holder on vents, but definitely not as good signal wise. But I just don't want to take apart iDrive unit and vents etc to fit wireless, as works fine on console cover.

Does anyone have the instructions to remove the headunit? The link quoted above seems to be broken.

I have the same question - reluctant to start pulling things apart without a guide!

Don’t be too concerned about that - I bought a Chinese one from Amazon and it worked perfectly. It’s more a case of having an antenna rather than not having one.

Kubax86 gave me some tips about installing the antenna on my own, it was relatively easy. And today he remotely activated Apple CarPlay and full screen on my 2018 X3 - it works perfectly and it took about half an hour.....it’s a major upgrade from the plain BT connection and totally worth it. I was really afraid of flashing the unit in my beloved car but he did a great job and was very user friendly - definitely recommend!
