X3 diesel re-mapping chip/plugin
Hi, I have 2006 3.0 diesel sport auto and would like to know if anyone has experience of having an ECU remap or used a plug-in chipping device.
I am interested if the increased power AND better mpg claims are true. Any makes of chip/remap that anyone has used would be valuable and cost or installation. I have recently fitted an ipod connection and would gladly give guidelines on it as it was a doddle to fit and inexpensive and gives full ipod control. Thanks Phil |

It had 3 maps - normal, fast, even faster The Normal map was very strong even though it was more focused towards economy. I never got to measuring wheel hp, but 0 -100 acceleration was reduced by 1.6 seconds from standard - as measured by GPS. All in all it was a blast to drive and pulled like demon. |

so long as it's done properly, keeping tabs on the A/F ratio, and EGT's, you won't suffer damage on those engines. hell, diesel engines can run on straight vegetable oil (seen it) and run well. those things can take one helluva beating.

I used the Dastek Uni-Q which allows upto 5 maps and is basically a piggy back device.
I never had any BMW warranty issues with it. There is also a sepperate plug n play wiring harness that can be employed to wire the Dastek unit with the BMW ECU so that there is no cutting into any of the wires in the BMW wiring harness. http://www.dastek.co.za/ Rob Green did the chip mapping on their dyno. Those boys know their game and have been around a long time. http://www.rgmotorsport.com To switch maps on the fly, I used a simple small 3 way toggle switch mounted next to the Tyre Pressure Monitor Reset switch in front of the ashtray. RGM now has a small 5 position radial switch so that all 5 maps can be accessed. Maps can also be selected via a bluetooth enabled device, but nothing beats a manual switch While your about it, you may want to get the Auto Box reprogrammed to the latest software. Mine was quite crappy initially and was much more responsive after the BMW re program. |

In Europe there are 150Kw/204hp, 160Kw/218hp and 210Kw/286hp versions of the 3.0litre diesel engine.

I have the 160kw 3.0d. Have been running a spider tuning box for approx 10k km now. Have not changed from default settings (yet). Different maps available - just have not tried them yet - maybe cos I am a tad worried about the extra torque blowing the AT. Fuel economy improved. Open road at 110kmph sits on 6.5 to 7.0ltr per 100km (sorry metric over here) - yes you may laugh at 110kmph but the boys in blue and speed cameras like fleas on a dogs back down here. Acceleration great fun (although the AT is too slow in the gear changes) and overtaking a blast. It is not the top speed but how quick you get there :-)
