Opinions please
2014 X3 pristine condition with only 55K miles went in for routine oil change....tech did not torque oil drain plug....on highway "low oil, drive cautiously" message came on....pull off highway....engine damage. Dealer is embarrassed and has offered 3 options: (1) repair cam journal(s)/drive car for extended period to verify all OK and provide extended warranty; (2) offer a good deal on a replacement vehicle; (3) replace engine with re-manufactured engine from BMW. Option 1 seems risky as additional damage may have occurred that will not present until some time in the future. Option 2 will be out of pocket expenses. Option 3 might make the most sense? Any opinions on theses options? Thanks in advance.

There is really no reason to do option 1 with option 3 on the table. Option 2, although it does cost you money, kind of depends on you and what you would have done with the car had it not been damaged. My question would be
"how good of a deal, and on what?" I'm exaggerating of course, but a new X3 for $10,000 may be money of my pocket, but may be money well spent. You can always explore option 2, and still choose option 3. |

Agree...find out how much of a deal they are offering and on what with Option 2, could be a low cost way to upgrade from a 2014 to a 2018?
Considering a reman N20 engine is around $5k, plus the labor involved, the deal in option 2 should be at least that much, plus however much they can get selling your old X3 for with a blown engine. So maybe figure resale value of your car (assuming good engine) as a good starting point for option 2?

3, 1 shouldn't even be considered.

I went through a warranty engine replacement on my Mini due to defective crank bearings. I wasn't really happy about it but the switch went without a hitch. I was happy with the new engine. I'd definitely go with option three.
