Tailgate doesn't close well?

I've had a couple of times where my tailgate comes down and then it opens back up on its own.
Has anyone had this problem? I'm now very paranoid about it after it did that during a trip to Costco. Luckily, one of the cart guys saw it and stuck around to make sure no one messed with the stuff in the trunk space.

You didn't happen to have the spare key inside a bag or purse in the car and try to lock it with the main key by any chance?

It happened to me a few times and I think it has something to do with the light reflection that activated the Comfort Access sensor.

Sometimes it happened when key fob was left in the trunk. But few times I double checked to make sure both my and my wife's fob are outside the car.

The tailgate will also reopen by itself if you walk too far away before it's completely latched. I've had this happen to me several times.

This might be it! I guess I'll just stand there and wait.

Nope, still not always latching completely. Sometimes it seems closed (no obstruction) and when I get in my car it tells me the trunk is open.
Time to hit up warranty maybe?

Absolutely! It could be as simple as adjusting the rubber bumpers, or as complicated as replacing the worm drive struts. Whatever it is, it's a warranty issue. Check with your dealer, and schedule it for when you can get a BMW loaner. (Your loaner won't be an X3, more likely an X1, a 1-series, or a 3-series, but schedule your warranty visit for when you can get a BMW loaner rather than a non-BMW rental or no loaner at all).
