Newer iDrive system
Theoretically can you purchase the newer iDrive with the touch pad and install it into a car with older iDrive system? On eBay I see the iDrive screen, system and touch controller for sale for about $900. I am assuming good amount of coding would be necessary for the swap.

If car has November or later software, there is locking procedure which makes installing "used" system on another vehicle more challenging.

My F010 and F015 have HU_NBT with touch controllers from factory. There is newer hardware (HU_NBT2 AKA HU_NBT_EVO), which can either have ID4.5, ID5, or ID6. To activate various options / packages / features, head-units must use hardware emulators and filters or FSC codes to activate. |

I guess if you have a iDrive 5 with the newest software, it can tell if the head unit is being pulled from the vehicle and therefore would be DOA, the head unit can not be installed into another vehicle.
