30d owners

We americans are excited about the news that we will be getting the 30d soon here, hopefully on the X3. Was curious about owner experiences and if anyone of you had cross-shopped it with the 35i?

Hi All

Bought new X3 30D on the 17th of February 2012. Have done 24,000km. Average consumption 7.75liters per hundred kilometres, I think that is 30mpg per US gallon. About three hours city driving the rest is highway driving at 100/110kph.

Rear tyres (tire) are down to bars, fronts have about 2000km left in them. They are Dunlop Maxx.

Very happy with the driving performance and fuel consumption. No problems other than finding out that BMW will not carry any warranty on particulate filter. See my other listing.

Hows the acceleration? Hows the top end? What replacement tires are you considering?

Acceleration off the line in DS mode is quite good. However, there is no "top end" because it is a diesel after all. Also feels like it has a bit of lag in normal compared with my VW Jetta turbo petrol. Obviously not quite as smooth as the petrol engine either.

Torque, torque, torque. Wafting along at nicely low rpm, but still a lot of uuumpf when you step on it. And then lower consumption than the gasoline model, especially during constant high speed driving on the autobahn. Never really thought about the 35i, as diesel and SUV is a very fitting combination. Only thing is, today I'd get a 35d (which was not available a year ago).

Hi All

Some good responses. Yes the short answer is torque torque !!

You will find some two wheel drives quicker off the line, not saying the 30d is slow off the the line but it is fast on up hill passing. Plenty of grunt to pass the 53.5 (178 feet and four inches) meter long road trains on road up through the middle of Australia.

Top end? don't know? It hauls straight past the Australian go to gaol speeds!! We live in police states.

Will put the 18 inch Dunlop Maxx tyres on again, as we bought two for our big trip, where we got as far as 6500 km from a stockest but have not used them.

All 3.0D's are limited to 130mph (210kmh) and it gets there quick enough , without the limited I would guess it would top out around 145mph considering how it is accelerating when it hits the limiter, no problem with top end!!!

I'll never test the top speed limit unless I drive through German- but why is the 30d limited to 130mph when it could go faster?

The original spec was for H rated tyres that are only good for 130mph, the V rated that are fitted to the 3.0D should be good for 150. I've also seen a german road test where it was tested to 143 (230kph) where it hit the limiter. I guess it is to keep distance between it and the 35D.

130 Mph or 150 Mph top end, its all academic. I'll never get there. Wish I could have compared 30d with 35d, but 30d was a stretch on the wallet.

I can assure you it will go a lot faster than 210km/h. On the German autobahn I reached 245km/h no probs. As far as acceleration it is plenty, not sure why there are comparisons with sedans or 2wd, the X3 30d is much quicker than its direct rivals ie a Q5. Go for it! Great drive...

I will prob get this when it comes out here, even though I am the typical american petrol fan. I plan to carry a bunch of stuff, get a luggage rack and board rack for the roof and take some long-distance trips, so the gas mileagae, torque and towing capacity will be good for me.

Mine hits the limiter, tried again just to be sure, but I was looking in the old sales spec. The first broucher listed the 3.0D at 143mph then later it's listed at 130mph.
A question for someone from BMW UK to answer, have they been slowed down and how easy is it to re-adjust
