Ross is my contact. I'm a technophile and would like to be able to check the status of my order online. This isn't possible so you are left with calling the dealer for updates, who in turn checks an archaic DOS system to look up your order.

The main status updates appear on the DOS system promptly but you get huge gaps in between. For example when the car is at status "departed plant", you have a 6 week wait for the next status update.

I find the whole process very opaque and the dealer very slow to return calls and emails. Perhaps this is just my elevated expectation. I ordered a custom build laptop recently from Sony, got an expected date range for delivery immediately, and could then follow the process online and got email updates when it was dispatched etc. Would it be that difficult to setup for ordering a car? I don't think so. After all, I could track my X3 across the Atlantic independently of the dealer for weeks and during this time on the dealer's system it was still showing as "departed plant". i.e. I knew more than the dealer did.

My advice is to ignore the status "updates", get your build date, find out if it did actually go into production on the week specified, and then add 6 weeks to this date to get your delivery date.

Whilst my X3 is still a long way away. I have ordered a MINI JCW which should be here by now. For the last 10 days the Dealer system has shown it as 'in transit' I really did not know it was that far from Oxford to Northamptonshire.

I dread to think what I will be like when I am chasing the X3 come the summer...

Thanks to Cooldude00 and Sfax for the info.

This may be a long shot, does anyone know if there is a going to be a change to X3 spec coming for 2012, and as my X3 is unlikely to be built until Jul/Aug, my build may incorporate some 2012 standards/upgrades? Does this sort of thing happen in the BMW world?

This happened to my current Seat Altea XL, the delivery time slipped, but once car arrived, it had the following years upgrades and standards included no cost.

6NR for iPhone applications is likely to be added as an option. Should be available from April

Worrying.......

My LexAutoLease account history shows that my delivery date is still 14th April 2011......but a colleague who ordered 3 weeks later is now showing 5th September!

I know it's built in the USA, but is the 'special relationship' balanced here?

Bu##er.

Just been advised by LexAutoLease that my 14th April ETA is now 9th May, and that it will probably go back further!

Apparently, the majority of UK orders that haven't yet gone into production are getting bumped for US orders.......

Sick. As. A. Dog.

You should give your dealer a bell tmw Bimmer and see if the status has been updated on their system. You'll probably be calling anyway and don't need me to tell you! Hope it's on schedule mate.

Im sure it will be in production as planned (the salesmen give you so much bullshit when placing the order - I was told early Feb originally, then March delivery then confirmed build commence week 8 with delivery week 14)

I wouldn't rely too much on the dealer ETAs. Wait until it goes into production and then add 6 weeks. I'm saying this because I was told late Dec/Jan, then early Feb but won't pick up until tmw

Just noticed your signature Viking. I'm not sure if that will help the long wait or not
