Winter Wheel/tyre for the UK

I found the following ebay advert for 17 inch 305s with Pirelli Sottozeros W210 Run flats for £1530.00 - BMW price £1700.02. The offer is from a UK BMW Dealer.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/F25-New-X3...item256df4f91a

The advert says 308s but the picture is of 305s - 308s are 18 not 17 inch wheels

My local BMW dealer was happy to match the offer, so they are on order.

Did your dealer order you the 18in 308s?

No. The BMW Part No is for the 17 inch 305s and matching Pirellis.

Interesting if these 17" wheels fit a 30d x3.

There is an ongoing debate if 17's will fit all X3's since the 28i & 35i petrol models have the same brake sizes contrary to what the dealership says.

The dealer required and used the registration number when ordering the wheel/tyre sets. The BMW Parts System was therefore aware that they were being ordered for a 30d Msport X3

Plus. The BMW UK Site lists the 305 17 inch wheels for the 30D but not the 35D

For my e92 330D I had to go to 18" as there was not enough clearance for the bigger brakes. I think that is the limitation, the wheels fit the hubs I believe.

I have a new F25 and to save some money I am going to use my 225 style 18" rims, they are non OEM but worked perfectly well in the e92. I just need to get myself some rubber, fancy these and at £488 for 4 delivered plus £20 for fitting to my local friendly fitter seems to be my most cost effective option.

I managed to get the 305's 17" with the Pirellis for £1,445 fitted today, but not stored, very happy with that.

Just asked the local BMW dealer he had one set left in stock.

Thanks for the advice

The advert you link to shows 225/60/R18. These will give you a rolling circumference of 2220mm versus the BMW speced 245/50 R18 rolling circumferance of 2143mm. ie a 3.5% larger circumference and distance travelled per revolution. Also a diameter that is 1 inch greater. Will that be ok? or was that just a sample size that you linked to?

I fitted a set of winter tyres last November £1350 not fitted from BMW, the car is on 19'' wheels but the winter tyres are 17'' Part No 2 184 636 Pirelli E 205/65 R17 96H. The difference is unbelievable in the snow.

My budget can't stretch to Winter Tyres, I've used these to good effect-

http://www.autosockdirect.co.uk/prod...=299&x=23&y=19

Not bought a set yet for the X3. Question is which wheels do I put them on, Front or Back?

waste of money - they would work a bit on a snow, but once you start driving on a hard surface - it is pretty much useless

Sweeping statement of the week award.
AutoSock is not designed to replace winter tyres- but just as a temporary solution to loss of traction if you have standard tyres on your car.
I've used them successfully on a few ski holidays, and in the UK. Once you're out of the snow and back on the tarmac, you take them off. Drive slowly with them on!
If you need a permanent solution then its winter tyres (£££), and then I presume ultimately snow chains (which I hate!)

OK, sorry for being so direct The 'sock' will work if you need to leave your driveway. But it is still pretty useless in all unforseeable situations that may happen during cold period. Would you use them if you drive home from work and it starts snowing and temperature gets bellow 0? You stop in the middle of a city or on highway?
It happened to me once that a rental car (which I booked for driving from airport to a skiing resort) was with summer tyres. On the way back from the resort it started snowing and some sections of the road were not cleaned. I rushed into local petrol station to buy either chains of 'socks'. The guy at the petrol station said that if you drive even a short distance on hard surface, the sock becomes uselless. I asked why do they sell them - 'tourists' was his reply. The sock would only be usefull if you are stationary and have a road covered in snow in front of you. If you have slippery road, black ice, etc - you want winter tyres. Would you insurance be OK with the socks if something happens?

Hi,

Are you planning to keep winter tyres on until spring next year?

I fitted mine in November last year to my 330d and by January they where more than half worn down. The rubber is extremely soft particularly at temperatures greater than 7 degrees C and they wear out at an alarming rate. My advice would be to flit them at the last possible minute before that snow arrives - they're certainly not the sort of tyre you want to fit too early.

My tyres where Bridgestone 225's from BMW on 17" alloys.

+1 Total waste if you get no snow IMO so bring it on. Not sure when to put my winter shoes on this year. Don't want to get caught out

Winter tyres are good in snow & ice but are better in all conditions below 7 degC. Our average Winter temp for the last 10 years has been below 7 degC for 7 of those years (see Met office site) even down here in the SW.
The Safety benefits are well known in Europe (yes with lower temp) and several Countries now have additional legal requirements regarding winter tyre usage. So yes it is borderline but given the cost is offset by the saving in tyre wear of the "summer" tyres I think they are worth while....

The 7C thing is a great marketing ploy but you can get much more safety and better stopping distances by simply replacing your summer tyres before the tread gets too low. I posted some stats on it a while ago but I usually get shouted down by the 7C brigade. Fact is the % difference in stopping distance for new tyres vs low tread tyres is much, much greater than winter vs summer at 5C wet or dry. Snow and ice are a different story of course

305 is the default for 3.0D SE (304 free option) - not sure why I remember as it took over a week for me to even think about looking at them on mine
