The Safety benefits are well known in Europe (yes with lower temp) and several Countries now have additional legal requirements regarding winter tyre usage. So yes it is borderline but given the cost is offset by the saving in tyre wear of the "summer" tyres I think they are worth while....
Totally agree.

Hi yes I'm planning to put them on last minute, I live in a very hilly area and would struggle in snow to get the kids to school in a morning even as the school is at the top of a hill. So it wasnt really an option to not put them on.
I was planning on waiting until mid November or first snow as the Garage said they could fit them with a days notice. I'll take them off end of Feb I guess hopefully will get a few years out of them which saves on buying a set of staggered 19's earlier. Plus whenever I sell the car hopefully get a bit money back with the extra wheels too.

I did a couple of thousand miles last year on my kumho winter tyres on the e92 330D, you would hardly think they had moved, seem to have worn very well.

Need to get myself some rubber I intend to use the 225 msport alloys on my f25 if they fit...I will try these on Sunday ***crosses fingers***

Also a diameter that is 1 inch greater. Will that be ok? or was that just a sample size that you linked to?
245/50/18 seems to be the recommended tyre size and whilst does have a larger circumference, the difference is marginal.

225/55/18 also I would suggest does the trick and at 60mph the speedo should show 60mph.

The tyre I was looking at 225/60/18 would show 62mph at 60.

First thing I have to do is to confirm my msport 18" alloys will fit the X3, thereafter I will commence the great tyre search. I may opt for the 225s but onlly if significantly cheaper. My 2.0D se is on 225 treads now, cant see that a 225/55/18 would be much difference in ride, feel and safety than a 245/50/18.

I would agree with your last paragraph.
Your earlier post suggested that you were looking at 225/60/R18. These would have been 3.5% larger circumference & 2.5cm greater diameter than the BMW spec'd tyres.

You are now comparing 245/50 R18s (2143mm circomference) with 225/55/18s (2150mm circumference). It would take a very highly refined 'calibrated eyeball' to detect a circumference difference of 7mm or 0.4%.

Won't you balls up the mileage and speedo if the circumference changes?

Yes if you significantly do so.

If you go to the wheels and tyres forum on the 3 series E9x there's a handy calculator which saves us all being students if Pythagoras.

Ill probably go with the 245/50/18's the difference in price isn't ridiculous I'm also in no particular hurry so will keep an eye on eBay and gumtree.

Ok the good news is my 225 style 18" rims fit perfectly though with the 225/40/18 tyres on they barely filled the arch. I now have to decide if it is a gamble or not to buy some winter rubber 245/50/18 or will they look odd in the arch as I don't have msport suspension.

Or am I talking pants? I would like to see an se 2.0d with that set up before I commit to buying the tyres. Guess asking on here for a pic is a long shot really.

Why does a 235/50/18 show 59MPH at 60 and a 245/50/18 show 60MPH at 60MPH?

I thought that the 235 bit was the tire width only, why does that affect the circumference, ie rolling distance? I would have thought that the profile (50) and the wheel size (18) would have been the only contributors to the equation C=PI*D,

Reason I ask is I have a chance of some decent 235s at a good price and I need an answer....

Should I buy these, I dont have to worry about a staggered set up and xdrive as I have the 2.0d all round.

Any advice would be welcome.

The difference is that the 235 & 245 is the width of the tyre and the xxx/50 is a PERCENTAGE of the width. So this would make the two tyres have a different circumference if you had 235/50 and 245/50.

The rolling circumference of 245/50 R18 is 2143mm (all the wheel/tyre options for the F25 are between 2141 & 2146mm).
The RC of a 235/50 R18 is 2113mm. ie 1.4% smaller.
So at the same wheel revolutions that (with BMW spec'd tyres) gives 60 Miles, with 235/50 R18 the car will physically only travel 60/1.014=59.17 miles.

The complexity is that speedometers actually measure wheel revolutions (not distance travelled) and convert that to distance using an average wheel/tyre set and then deliberately over read the MPH by 7 or 10% depending on manufacturer and model.

^^^ sounds close enough...

Just measured my msport alloys diameter = 49.6cm the 17" stock alloys on my f25 are 46.8cm. I may just see if I can get these 235's.

That's 235/50/18 as above.
