10 days and a couple hundred miles later and still silent. This fix works!

I've been hearing this noise- it sounds like the windscreen wipers taping very lightly on the windscreen. Only audible when the audio system is off.
I stopped the car tonight, and opened the bonnet. If I pressed the plastic above the struts & I could recreate a rubbing noise. I pressed down firmly a couple of times on the plastic vents and the noise has disappear. Let's see if it lasts.

I did the same for a while, but pressing the plastic back into place only lasted a few days. I hope this works for you. The fix I describe in this thread is easy to do, so don't hesitate to do it if your noise returns. My X3 has been dead quiet since.

I think I had this noise in my car. Now it is at service. If noise is not fixed, I will try the fix explained in this topic.

I am just curious that howcome no one took a videoshot with audio about the noise?

And in here, to "confirm noise problems", the service manager and I drove together with the car to identify the noises. After that, it was clear to manager that noises are present.

@Xdrive35i
Clunk from drivers side either when turning or going over speed bumps is the steering rack. Open your hood and grab it. It's on the right side and is shiny silver. The knuckle apparently goes bad over time . I'm getting a new one soon.
As for the rustling ...thank goodness someone figured it out.

This thread is brilliant! I followed instructions offered and for the first time drove my car without the dreaded rustling sound! What a difference!
Thanks to all the folks who contributed information on this fix!!
