BMW Remote App for Android

BMW have finally woken up and released the android app. You can access it from the play store

Its about bloody time too. iPhones are a shrinking market share and currently only hold 16.9% global market share. Companies really have to wake up and not think that they only have to develop an iphone app.

Android app

I assume to be able to sound the horn, flash the lights etc., you have to have specified the option - "Mobile Application Preparation"?

Well I've just managed to flash the headlights! There is a delay of a few minutes before the lights flash. It might be quite cool if you were hiking at night and your car was parked on a hilltop in the distance, but otherwise I cannot think of any practical use.

There is no option to sound the horn.

I get "vehicle position unknown". Not very helpful!

There is a lock/unlock feature which I haven't tried, and probably won't.

Lock/Unlock comes in handy when you're sitting in a restaurant and can't remember whether or not you locked your car. It does not set the alarm, only locks the doors.

We in US get :
1. Google Search and sending location to car
2. Lock/ Unlock
3. Remote horn
4. Flashing headlights
5. Locating your car if it is within 0.6 mile (1km)

With the new update, I'm getting the response in 40-50 seconds.

For me, first two are useful.

The delay is the car waking up / booting up before processing the command. Try sending a command just after you've switched off iDrive and locked it and it will take about 20 seconds.

I've used flashing lights for finding my car in a car park at night but I would have found it anyway about 1 min later

You would only get vehicle position unknown if your X3 had no data signal or no GPS. Depends where it's parked. There is also a 2km privacy limit.

It has nothing to do with Mobile Application Preparation (6NR). All features are available without this option

Remote Lock is very useful for peace of mind as 02420X3 says

In the UK the sound the horn option was available in March 2011 but it disappeared. Could be legal thing if other markets still have this feature.

Remote ventilation is also handy in the summer if your X3 is parked in the sun and you don't want to sit in an oven when you return to it. It makes a difference

Android is the operating system. Your phone is Symbian. I don't think Nokia make Android phones - or they didn't use to at least

Same in the US "This item cannot be installed in your device's country."

I guess with the US being such a small market for BMW it's not a priority for them.

You can sideload the app if you download the apk file. Google apk-downloader extension for chrome web browser.

Unhappy Play Store on your Phone vs. Browser

Here's the app:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...com.bmw.remote

Of course, since it's not intended for US distribution, it won't show up in the store on your phone. I, for one, won't bother sideloading it, given the sparse number of features. I would expect more to become available with time, but I really can't understand why this is limited to Europe.

Much obliged...now I have to figure out how to install it, given that the play website is still telling me that "this item isn't available in your country." Even if the app is of limited use, just the fact that it is restricted to me makes me want it more.

Completely and totally irrelevant. Samsung alone ships more phones than Apple if you want to play that game.

Looking at platform, Android outsold iOS 4:1 last quarter. Android phones now make up 68% of the world market.

That 17% is down 2% from a year ago, BTW. That BMW has ignored this trend until now is appalling. That is the point here.

Oh boy, another useless app. The two swinging Czechoslovakian guys from Saturday Night Live can impress their dates by flashing the car lights and honking the horn.
