Staggered wheel set up question for X3 M plus a nice video review
I finally want to get rid of my Goodyear run flats, it's about that time. Has anyone attempted and executed a staggered setup on the stock M-Sport 19" Rims. I want to do 255s in the front and 275s in the rear. My question is will 275 be to wide for the stock rim? If so I would like to do 255's all around rather than the stock 245's that are not adequate for me. Please help...could not find this posted elsewhere for this particular SAV. THANKS..
Oh and by the way this is my highly rated review for my 2013X3 35i M-sport. Please like, comment, and share... |

Basically pokerface is pointing out the fact that the standard tires have a rolling radius of 27.68 and 27.66 inches respectively. It is really important to keep as close as possible to this as various problems can occur, such as speedo inaccuracy and processor problems associated with the X drive. I have heard that the wrong diameter tires can also cause problems with the transfer box.

okay that makes sense but..
so put simply the 255s should work well and cause the least amount of problems according to the variables, the question is will the 255s mount seamlessly to the stock rear rim... thanks for the insight

I'm not sure the 255s will be OK due to their larger rolling radius. Apparently the X Drive system is very sensitive; only what I have heard!
I would think that 255s would be OK on the stock rims. A good tire shop should be able to advise. If I was in your position though, I would speak to the service guys at a BMW dealer. They usually give good advice, or at least they have whenever I have phoned. |

Sorry Crash.. I had a handy guide at work, was going to type something up but accidentally clicked send.
Anyway. The front tires are in the 245/45/19 size. On staggered set ups the rears would go 275/40/19 which has a 0.02 inch difference in diameter from the front. As mentioned by ianfp you need to get them as close as possible. Poor maintenance by owners may have led BMW To cancel the staggered set up and start delivering them square (245 all around), as not keeping the diameters close may have led (or they think it will) to damage to the xdrive. As for the other sizes, I was just mucking around a tire size configurator to arrive at the closest diameters using different combinations. I have no idea if tire shops actually can get these other sizes. You could go after 255s all around although based on the diameter you may impact your speedometer and odometer. ****i also have to put a disclaimer that I don't work for any automotive parts / tire industry ****change tire configurations at your own risk that the speedometer and stability control calibrations may be thrown off. |

I have the 19" staggered wheels.
They came with 245-45R19 fronts and 275-40R19 rears. Maybe you can't find some used on the forum ? I don't know how much they cost. It would solve your problem. |

You made me fall in love with my X3 all over again. I have been thinking about getting an X5M CPO and agree with what you said in the video. But from a practicality/performance standpoint you can't beat the X3 35i M Sport! I think I am just going to get a performance chip and that should satisfy my power needs! Thanks again for a great video! One thing I did notice is that the 2011 is different from your model year. I only have three settings comfort, sport and sport plus. I don't have access to the extra settings for sport mode either. Like the HP/Torque gauges. I would also like to know about the coding! Seeing the PSI of the tires is awesome!

Did you see my video on my channel with the JB3 tune 0-60 sprint. I hit 5 seconds flat, just .5 seconds off an x5m. crazy. I got rid of the Jb3 though. made "drivetrain malfunction" come on at least once a week

Do you mean a channel on YouTube?
BTW the coding that you mentioned is that something you can do yourself?

Yes you can do it yourself. There is a comprehensive document on one of these forums. It's a "sticky". Yes my YouTubre channel I mean. But if you have a bimmer just pay someone to do it. You don't want things going wrong. With that being said. If no one is around. You are on your own.

Great video review! One quick question for you; you mentioned having a K&N filter, what kind of difference did it make? Any HP increase, or just better throttle response? I have the 28i, and looking for any increase in performance. Wasn't sure if the K&N would be worth it though.

You say the interior is wonderful and you guarantee nobody would complain about it. I do complain about it. Everything is hollow to the touch, plastics are thin and poorly padded, and the dashboard feels like straight up astroturf. The wood and stitching are nice--in fact the overall design is very pleasant and upscale. The actual execution leaves much to be desired. My X5 was tight as a drum, my 535xi was sometimes brittle but completely worth it, and all of my Audi's have been top notch. Something's off about this car, and I've had two of them, so I don't think it's just a fluke.

Regarding the k&n and the interior.
The filter provides less then 8 whp with the 35i engine. Probably only 3 for the 28i. Will you feel the difference? Barely... Get it anyway though. Regarding the interior... Remember the base car cost 43k, and there are no interior upgrades like the X5, 535i, etc... I'm not knocking on the interior listening to how hollow it sounds. I'm lowering my radio and smashing the throttle. That sounds awesome. Like I said this is not the best most fancy tight interior but it gets by just fine for my needs. If you are that concerned with the interior, if I were you I would sell it. Get the sq5 or the x5. The x3 is not for you bro. |

Love the video! Very thorough. Just a couple minor points, there are no cameras in the front, just one under each mirror and one in the back; also the rear shades are a $250 option not $500. The only things you didn't mention in the review are the sunroof and the HUD. Loved all the acceleration runs. I agree with you - 35i M Sport is a pretty killer package and your video makes me want to take mine out for a spin. Cheers.
